NVidia Shield - and Sync

Why can the plex client on Nvidia Shield not sync movies ?
Seems a bit of an over sight ?

Update, it cannot sync, infact anyone out there I would not even bother with plex on the Nvidia, Im in the process of building a new PMS that is not plex, since the development of Plex is falling behind other software vendors.

Plex on the Android Shield is pretty poor - yet awesome on Android mobile – Weird !

Don’t know what you are talking about. It’s not a mobile device so there is little reason for sync for the general masses. It should be stationary and always attached to the network and hence the content.

It’s also one of the best (if not the best) clients available for Plex.

There is a perfectly good reason to sync between Nvidia shield. One of my sons has a video of my younger son playing guitar at a gig. Recorded in 1080p but audio is 384k… Comcast sucks so I can’t stream it from my sons Plex server that has Plex pass. I bought Plex pass to sync with my sons server. I was quickly dissapointed. I had to sync to my phone and then cast from my phone.
Dumb. I will check the net. I have side loaded apps to my shield before. I will check to see if I can side load a tablet version of Plex to see if sync works.
It was stupid to hobble Plex server for shield.

There are several reasons to enable sync for non mobile devices.

First off, the shield isn’t my main server, it’s just a streaming device on my TV. That said, I would love to be able to sync over some of my main smart playlists so I can keep watching if my main server should happen to go down.

It would also be nice to be able to sync over higher quality than I can stream. Not everybody has a great network or ISP. I’m sure that the people that are limited to streaming at 480, would love to be able to sync over 1080p.

I would also like to point out that a Shield isn’t exactly permanently attached.

I’ve worked places where we would watch movies or shows on the night or weekend shifts. A Shield TV with 500GB of media synced on it could be used where corp wifi blocks Plex or cell signal isn’t that great.

You could also sync a lot of stuff onto one before a family trip somewhere. 500gb worth of media could go a long way to keeping bored kids occupied while you help aunt Gertrude get ready for her wedding.

So, yes, there are plenty of reasons to put sync on the Shield.

That is exactly my usecase my parents travel a lot and we have a Shield in their camper van. Every week or 2 they generally go though an area with enough reception that they could pull down some content by 95% of the time they need the content local to play back and have no internet.

In this usecase we used a chromecast in the past and synced to their phone but that did not work as a chromecast can’t playback from plex on a mobile if the chromecast itself can’t connect to the internet. I think it uses the internet to download the plex client or something on the chromecast. The shield was hopefully going to be the answer with an attached drive but it does not support sync.

Does anyone know if you can load the normal mobile plex application on there somehow so you can use sync? I really need the sync support.

+1 for this. I cannot stream 4K from my main server, but would love to sync it to my shield so I can watch in 4K

I want this feature also, the shield is a portable device; we use it on holidays, trips away and also if the main server has a problem/upgrade time.

I actually bought my Shield so I could do this! At one point, a few years ago, you could actually do this… I should have researched more before buying it.

What’s the point in me syncing loads of stuff to my mobile phone, only so that I can stream it back to a 500gb Shield?

Worst of all, it’s the same APK (ish!)!!! I backed-up the version from my mobile and side-loaded it into the Shield only see no sync options! It’s like its just being force “off”, I’m guessing so the PMS is used/installed instead on the Shield?

+1 For syncing to shield, definitely a use case. Don’t know why other users assume it “has” to be in the same network? It could be useful for alleviating throttling/peering or all around slow internet issues.

I came here from google exactly for this reason - would love to sync to my Nvidia Shield. It’s mostly hooked to 1 Gbps connection, but I found out just yesterday that my friend bought a new 75" samsung microled TV and wanted me to come over actually play something nice on his new TV. So here I am, trying to solve this issue

+1 for this feature request as well. It would be great if you could add items to an “offline” mode and let movies sync across.

This needs to be added ASAP.

I would also really like this feature. It has a number of uses. The decision makers at Plex know better than their customers though.

Was trying Emby the weekend. Not quite as polished as Plex, but is getting there. Some aspects of it are far superior. When it’s good enough I’ll permanently sever my relationship with Plex.

+1 Another vote for this feature

I would appreciate this feature as well. Android TV in a camper here too.

How is this not a feature … Blowing my mind right now. I have tons of 4k content hosted at a diff location and it will not stream original bitrate… I got the Nvidia shield so I could sync and play the 4k on my tv… Guess not. Anyone got any other devices that will do it instead??

+1 to this as well. Out internet is spotty so something’s a show or movie will play fine. Others times not at all. Offline would mean my internet could do what it likes and I can still enjoy my content.

I also use 1 of my shields as a portable, so would be great to have the sync function like say the mobile tablet, then it’s better I could plug the shield into any tv and watch my offline syncs (instead of doing it with the tablet)
