I just put a 256 gig micro SD in my Nvidia Shield TV … plenty of space… only to find out that Sync isn’t available for Android TV.
+1 need this feature on shield and android TV. A lot of us have crappy ISP’s, so sync is a useful work around. The storage issue is something the user can obviously be made aware of and have to solve, but there’s nothing technically stopping Plex from offering sync on more devices.
It’d be great if you could setup sync to be smart, where I’d downloaded the next episode or two in the tv series you were currently watching.
Improvements like this will make Plex pass even more attractive to those who don’t have I yet as well.
To the Plex Employee who posted back in December… Not supporting Android TVs is a rubbish statement. Turning on PMS on the Shield and manually copying files is just a silly statement! Having a 2nd PMS just means all your played/not played data is not synced between the servers! This is the whole point of Plex in the first place.
I took the APK from my mobile and sideloaded it onto my shield and the sync function is just not being displayed. All other android TV functionality is still there in the apk. This to me says that the APK can sync but is only being enabled if it detects an Android handset and not TV.
This is an existing function, that already exists within the Plex on Android client software, just turn it on for Android TVs.
Please sort it out Plex! Simple fix…
+1 on enabling sync to Android TV.
+1, this would be a life saver. I take my nvidia shield everywhere when i travel. Moving house, 7 days without internet wouldn’t be a problem either.
Not sure why its not enabled?
Come on Plex, this is stupid not to have this feature. Your excuse not to have it is not a valid excuse. Just make it an option at least! I’m fairly new to Plex but I’m already looking to see what my other options are. The software is widely inconsistent across devices / platforms. You almost have to have a PC, Phone, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, Roku all at once to get all the features. This is ridiculous and making me rethink my plex pass purchase. Not sure if they offer refunds, but I can always file a dispute.
How could this be overlooked by Plex?
+1 for me as well
I’m guessing the only work around for this is to turn the shield into a server and ‘copy’ or ‘optimise’ the media you want to take with you from your current server to an SD card.
I agree though being able to sync to shield would be a good feature to have
PlexPass supporters,
I too am in support of this feature as an owner of multiple Nvidia Shield devices, and one dedicated to travel.
As we’ve heard Plex haven’t got this on the roadmap so I think as this is only the 50th post on the forum it’s time to turn to social media to drum up some support for the Plex team to sit up and take notice.
Don’t get me wrong the Plex team are doing a wonderful job and introducing some great features but as a long term PlexPass subscriber it is hard to see how something as simple as this has been missed.
Let’s focus our efforts on Facebook - Plexaholics might be a good place to start and see if we can get enough supporters to get this on the roadmap.
Thoughts?
Another PlexPass user who could do with this feature.
On a surf holiday with the family in a tiny village with slow internet.
It would be useful to sync some of their favorite movies to the box/USB, so the family can sit around and watch rather than an ipad.
Ah wow. Also just bought a plex pass and now instantly regretting it.
Gosh. I should have listened to the posters saying not to pay for plex as it has several issues.
I will see if I can get a refund as this is a real let down.
Let us all spread the news that plex developers see requests for simple features for 3+ years, yet choose to ignore them and pretend they are not an issue.
What poor service.
+1 for this feature … I have little confidence they will deliver or respond … lack of options in the market is not a good reason to have poor customer service … sooner or later that trend will change and you’ll have a hard time winning back your customer base.
This feature is long overdue
While I’m passionate about this feature, the Plex development team has limited bandwidth and a long priority list supporting a multitude of servers, clients and media types.
It doesn’t exactly seem fair to complain that our edge-case feature request not being picked up is an indication of Plex’s commitment (or lack of) to their users. Realistically this may never be a high enough priority feature request/use case to get picked up.
Another +1 for this. I have a new 4k UHD TV arriving in an hour and to prepare I downloaded some super high quality 4k stuff. My server is powerful enough for it, but my Shield is on WiFi so I wanted to physically have the file on it to prevent any issues. I can just use a giant flash drive or external drive I suppose, but I was very surprised to see I couldn’t just sync it. All the excuses against it make little to no sense. Not enough space? Are you joking? My shield has 500gb BUILT IN.
The only explanation here is that there is a lack of Nvidia Shield fans on the Plex team. If they were fans of the device (or the manufacturer?), someone on the team would spend a few hours one evening toggling this setting and push it out.
+1 again
The use case is simple. I use the Nvidia shield at my cottage with me plex server at home. The internet connection here is not good enough to sustain a reliable stream… Well… Not from plex anyway.
+1 Would be nice for working away from home
From the replies here it looks like there is a good bit of enthusiasm for this feature. I would definitely love to see it. I was looking at using the Plex server in the shield as a workaround, but with Plex Plug-ins being discontinued, there’s no simple way to sync the watched status between the two servers I end up creating, and I’d end up manually managing the media and sync. It’d be so much nicer if this feature could be enabled on the shield.
a lot of portable projectors use Android TV, so it would be really neat to have the ability to sync content on the Android TV plex client. thank you
