With the partnerships Plex are going for, I doubt external player support will ever happen. They won’t be able to control the subscription based streams and prevent piracy on them if they allow you to control the player.
Emby and jellyfin are getting stronger and stronger each month, there’s a decent chance that in a year or so - they’ll be feature complete, stable and good looking enough to make for a more open and compelling alternative to Plex. I’m beginning to think our only option is to wait for that to happen. Plex just aren’t focusing on our side of the market anymore, they’re only putting time and effort into the mainstream stuff, and chasing silly ideas like VR playback - instead of important stuff, like basic functionality.
What do you mean server side? PMS will already burn in those subtitles if requested. If you mean to support direct playing, that’s controlled by the client.
My client is an old 2014 Samsung BD Player and unfortunately the developer whom made the app for it no longer works on it.
Guess I can wait for the next iteration of Xbox next Xmas.
Is it possible, yes. But it would require rewriting a lot of the app. It’s not a simple drop and replace.
Updating to the current version of Exoplayer was already a daunting task and took over 6 months. So, I doubt switching to Kodi’s player would be anything that would be considered any time soon, but you never know.
The PLEX app on my LG 65C9 works fine with .ass subs when I select “Image Subs only”. Including styling and even karaoke.
Why is there no option for “Never transcode” specifically for subs? As the Shield TV does support image based subs I don’t want to change the setting all the time. For now am using the WebOS app for .ass material and .pgs/TrueHD audio on Shield…
And if both fail: PLEX for Kodi always works, but interface is dated.
