Nvidia Shield (Android TV) Plex Player plays like it is remote

Hi,

I have my Plex server and Nvidia Shield TV connected to same switch. They are in the same network subnet.
Recently I noticed that it is playing transcoded media instead of the original media.
Server is transcoding and using high cpu.
Also on Plex Server GUI , I see it is not direct play.

When I change the settings of the player to play maximum quality for remote connection, it plays directly (no transcoding)
What may be the reason of this device acting as if it is remotely connected ?

why nobody even triy to answer ?

Does the network use an IP range for private networks?

Does your router perform ‘DNS rebinding protection’?

yes: 192.168.254.0/24

Does your router perform ‘DNS rebinding protection’?

no

so ?

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 2 minutes
  6. Play one video for a minute. Please note down the title of the video.
  7. wait 1 minute
  8. fetch log files and attach them here

I have this same issue as well on my Nvidia Shield. The issue started recently, had to be the last update. It’s playing all my media as if I’m not on my local network. I know this becasue I have “Remote streaming” in the settings at 2Mbps, 720p. And that’s exactly what the video is being played at.

Your logs say that it is playing directly and not transcoded and that the client is indeed in the local network.

Can you check which process is causing the high CPU load on the server? (use the process monitor CTRL+Shift+Esc)

If the log says it’s not but still transcoding then that’s a bug. Where do we report this at? Figured they’d have a report thread some where

I have changed my config to max for remote streaming. so it plays direct.
You also saw “location=lan” because now the problem is not existing.
It only occurs sometimes.
So I have to get you a log when it occurs again.

Let me set 720p for remote streming. Then wait for it to occur again.

Btw, did you see high CPU load ?

on process monitor, highest cpu usage is on swm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) with 2%-5%
sometimes, when Utorrent is downloading, it is making high CPU.

I complained about this issue quite a bit the first year I had my Shields (2017 models)…then I stopped.

I chalked it up to the Netgear N900 router I was using. At the point I went to Spectrum’s Ultra (now Gig) Internet service, they were adamant I use their router. I capitulated and got the Sagecom Fast 5280 RAC2V1S router and haven’t had the issue since.

That appeared to be my issue anyway…

I’ve recreated the problem.
Please check this log.
Video file is “Midway”

Thank you for the logs. It appears that there were subtitles involved. What happens if you disable the subtitles before starting the playback?

There is currently a new client version rolled out on Android TV.
Version 7.30 has a fix which might help with this issue.

this does not occur always but I always use subtitles (text , not internal)
so I don’t think it is related to subtitles. If I observe something , I will write here.

is there a release not for v7.30 on Android TV ?

Btw, how did you see high CPU load ?

on process monitor, highest cpu usage is on swm.exe (Desktop Window Manager) with 2%-5%

Sorry, I don’t understand you here.

I didn’t mention high cpu load.

utorrent has nothing to do with Plex.

didn’t you say you observed high CPU load above ?

what do you mean ? didn’t you write that above ?

You did so in your first post above.

I informed you that a new software version is currently being distributed to Android TV clients (the Shield is an Android TV device).
