Plex on Nvidia Shield

Hello, can someone tell me why the nvidia shield trascodes EVERYTHING? all my other devices are direct play, my PC, my Phone, my laptop… but i cant get direct play on shield no matter what i do…

This is not due to the Nvidia shield. I suspect something network related.

Is there anything different about the shield compared to the other devices you mentioned? Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi? VPN? When you play something look in the dashboard and make sure it says local and not remote.

You can play something on the shield and post your logs. One of the guys around here should be able to tell you exactly what the problem is

my friend has the same problem and he’s hardwired, it works fine on his firestick, but plex on his shield transcodes everything same with me, says remote my friend is watching something now, and i dunno how to post logs

There’s a wide variety of reasons why something transcodes

It’s much more likely a remote stream transcodes due to all the factors. Server type and performance, bandwidth, and the specifics of the file you’re trying to play. Also, if your remote settings aren’t right all files could be played through a relay instead of directly from your server.

But EVERYTHING is transcoding, even on your home network it’s not right if other clients play that same content fine. The shield by most measures is one of the most capable android clients.

Play something at home that transcodes on the shield but doesn’t on your Fire device. Stop playback and wait a minute or two

Go into the server settings (little wrench top right)

Under the troubleshooting section at the bottom left you will see the spot to download logs

Attach the zip file here

I don’t read logs but hopefully an employee will come by and be able to pinpoint what’s going on

I’ve a Shield as my primary Plex client. I bought it because it direct plays everything I throw at it.

@JaysPlex is on target. If your Shield is transcoding everything, then something is amiss.

Snag the server logs and upload to the thread.

the one above is using the plex desktop app on my PC everything is direct play. and works perfectly

this one is from the plex web, which gives same results as plex on my shield, let me know if the logs are working.

both are exactly the same movie nothing has changed.

Where’s the Shield? Your picture shows Plex for Windows and Firefox.

the TV is occupied at the moment so i cant get on the shield, but the webui has the same problems as the shield does it’s identical

To diagnose a Shield related issue, the logs must capture playback from the Shield.

When the TV is free, play the movie on the Shield, then pull a new set of logs and post to the thread.

does it really matter tho it’s the same problem i’m having, you can technically say it’s a shield and a web issue, sure the devs can still diagnose it

Let me be clear.

If you want help diagnosing a Shield related problem you must provide log files that capture a Shield related problem.

Otherwise, you’re just wasting everyone’s time.

Transcoding itself doesn’t mean there’s a problem. Like the Shield being one of the most capable client players, a browser is the least capable. Even between browsers that file might play different. That same file might play direct if you use Chrome or Edge.

As you can see by your screenshot Firefox is converting that file’s audio from Eac3 5.1 to ACC Stereo.

Your Shield should direct play that file no problem. That’s why the logs from the specific device are important

let me know if it works, that’s on plex shield

The first thing I would check is the Video quality settings on the Shield Plex client. Make sure that under Video Quality:

Adjust Automatically = off
Home Streaming = Maximum

Did you get it?
