Nvidia Shield As Server W/O Interface?

Hello all! I hope I’m in the right place… I’m looking into getting a dedicated Plex Server, and I think I like the Nvidia Shield Pro. All I need out of it is the capability of a single 4K stream and maybe a simultaneous 1080p stream just for good measure.

My question is as follows: Can I use the Nvidia Shield as just a server? I still want to view and run Plex through my Apple TV 4K, so once I get the Nvidia Shield set up, can I put it somewhere out of the way to let it run without the need to use Plex through the Shield’s user interface except for, like, maintenence?

I apologize if this is a stupid question. While I consider myself good with computers, I don’t have a lot of experience with servers in any capacity.

Thank you in advance for any clarity anyone may be able to provide!

Sure. You don’t even use the Shield to manage PMS running on the Shield. You do that through Plex Web which you can run on any other machine.

Although if you already have the Shield, why not just use it for the client too? The Shield has better audio support than the Apple TV too.

It’s just a matter of preference for me. I like my Apple TV’s interface, I use it for all my streaming apps and Airplay, and I can control the whole box using my iPhone. It’s kind of a one stop shop for all my streaming needs at this point and I don’t want to have to even switch inputs on my TV, since the TV remote is put away in a drawer somewhere, as my Apple TV controls my stereo and TV for me as well.

But anyway, thank you for your input. Now I wonder if there’s a cheaper option than the shield that might suit my needs at a lower price point, since I don’t need the interface side at all… I’m just tired of having to keep my laptop open to run the server so I can watch things on my TV.

There’s not anything much cheaper than the Shield for use as a Plex Media Server. You may be able to find a small NAS, but that won’t have a lot of processing power.
