I couldn’t find any topic relating to my unique (or perhaps not) setup. I already have a Home Server that runs Plex, and all is well there.
What I would like to do is purchase a Nvidia Shield and then “share” or link the content from my Home Server to that device so it’s available. Is this even possible? Or if not does someone have some other setup that I could try out…
Basically, I like the Nvidia interface with regards to browsing using apps for our family and our basement setup with a projector. The rest of the HS works great for the rest of the house music and video wise.
You should just be able to download the plex app and login, then watch your content without issue. The shield is regarded as one of the best clients for Plex that there is, given the amount of hardware decoding standards it supports. Have you tried that yet?
No I haven’t tried it this was like a pre-question prior to purchasing. I thought that within Nvidia Shield you were downloading the server app rather than just the just the Plex app. That’s pretty cool thanks for your answer
Plex is a client-server system. There is Plex Media Server, which you already have running, and the various Plex Clients - AndroidTV (Nvidia Shield, Amazon FireTV, etc), AppleTV, Roku, Plex Media Player for Windows & Mac systems, etc.
For the Shield, you launch the Plex app. You’ll be asked to authenticate your Plex account (you only do this once). Once you do that, you will see your server, libraries, etc.
The Shield can also function as a Plex Media Server. You won’t need that capability given your description of things.
The Plex app ships pre-installed on the Shield. It will be outdated. Be sure to update the Shield system & apps to current versions.
You’ll need a good network connection. Wired gigabit Ethernet preferred. If wireless, you’ll need a solid signal. If streaming 4K HDR, you’ll need 802.11AC. If you want to test things, load Plex Media Player (linked above) on a laptop and place it where the Shield will be located.
The Shield is a very good Plex client. I’ve had mine for 2+ years and am very happy with it. I haven’t done a side-by-side comparison w/ an AppleTV or Roku, but IMHO, it is head & shoulders better than an Amazon FireTV stick.
My setup:
Shield <–HDMI–> Denon 4300 <–HDMI–> LG B7 OLED
