Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) - Audio transcoding forces subtitles to transcode from SRT to ASS

Because of having a Sonos Beam and using One’s for surround, I transcode all audio to get surround when possible.

However I’ve noticed that audio transcoding for some reason also transcodes the SRT files to ASS and makes the files need even more buffering and breaks seeking backwards and forwards sometimes. This seems unnecessary as SRT is supported without transcoding on the Nvidia Shield while ASS is not, and thus causes more issues.

Disabling the SRT subtitles makes the buffering and seeking breaking happen less/not at all.

This is an issue with non shield devices also.

Honestly, the conversation takes next to zero resources that its really not worth the effort, but it is annoying

Hey hey, thanks for that insight.

The conversion isn’t that bad, however on the Shield right now, and whatever other Android client that doesn’t natively work with ASS, it has a big chance on breaking seeking back and forward.

The seeking issues have been fixed a bit in the last few updates, but as long as ASS is forced for perfectly working SRT it’ll always be a bit wonky at times in Android.

But you’re right, it’s an annoyance and not the end of the world. Just feels illogical that it’d transcode the most obvious subtitle codec (SRT) to one that isn’t supported as much by Plex right now (ASS).
