First post here :), i’m using plex for years and a plex pass owner.
I have a dedicated plex server on windows 10 (i5 7400 + nvidia p2000 for hw transcoding, 32 Go ram, system and plex on nvme drive) and it works like a charm. I recently have migrated to plex 64 bits when it was officially available.
My main player is my nvidia shield on 65" LED samsung TV.
I don’t know when it started but i recently discover (using tautulli) that when i use SRT subtitles (which is normally the most compatibles ones) they are transcoded to ASS subtitles. I have tried a lot of files (4K HDR, 1080p H264, 1080 h264, AC3 sound, e-ac3, dts) and even when video and audio are direct play, subtitles are transcoded to ASS.
It’s very odd as normally the problem is with ass subtitles transcoded to srt.
First i thought it was a shield issue (recent update) but have the same issue with web player and plex on android phone.
I also tried to reverse to 32 bits plex with no success.
It’s not a big issue but i’m french and mostly watch movies and tv shows in orignal version.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks for your help (hope my english is not too bad )
It’s not a big problem, but i don’t think it’s the normal behaviour, right?
SRT subtitles should be natively read by all players?
I make a lot of efforts to keep my mkv files clean (naming with filebot, cleaning unwanted subtitles and audio tracks with mkvtoolnix) and try to use the most compatible codecs.
I have a lot of family members accessing my plex, unwanted transcoding is wasting ressources :).
Also, transcoding involve buffering and not instant play.
As far as I remember, this is done for certain client types only, in an effort to improve direct-playability.
Also, since SRT and ASS are both text-based formats, the computational effort for the conversion is negligible.
After days of searching, i finally found the culprit last night, the TV. I have a soundbar connected to tv with optical. The tv hdmi audio was on PCM instead of bitstream and HDMI passthrough was not activated in plex. Now everything direct play, no more eac3 transcoding and no subtitles transcoding. The link between audio and subtitles transcoding is very odd…
