Olympic Recording Disaster

Oh, interesting. I was assuming it was additional content. Since NBC tends to focus on the US competitors and most popular events, I was hoping it would be additional events and competitors they didn’t want to show in prime time. I wanted to record it so I could see for myself, but haven’t been able to. The fact that the overnight sessions are an hour longer than prime time made me think it was more content but perhaps it’s just more ads.

It sounds like I’m not missing anything, but it would be nice to have the option to record it to see for myself.

Yes, it does. But based on @pshanew 's response it sounds like this content that isn’t being recorded is a repeat of the primetime content. Disappointing that NBC isn’t sharing more content for folks who love the Olympics, but assuming that’s the case it seems Plex is working as expected.

It would be nice to be able to see that for myself though. I suppose that goes back to supporting a feature of being able to set a recording for a channel and time regardless of the guide.

Hmm… I didn’t notice it in your earlier post that there’s an additional, hour-long broadcast after the re-airing; I don’t have that in my market an so can’t see if it’s unique and records. The difference between markets make it difficult for apples-to-apples comparisons, so my experience here may not be completely relevant.

Here’s the schedule that I’ve looked at for the west coast (weekdays only, weekends are similar but a bit of a different beast). Olympic Daytime 10am-3pm. Olympic PrimeTime 5pm-8:30/9:00PM, Olympic Primetime Plus (West Coast, maybe Mountain time as well, only, covering the East coast news gap) 8:30/9:00pm-9:05/9:35PM, Olympic Late Night 9:05PM/9:35PM-11PM. Anything that airs after that is repeats of those last three shows, though it may be truncated. Weekends are pretty similar, daytime starts around 5am, and primetime starts around 4pm. The guide also breaks up weekend days a bit more. Hope this helps with comparison.

If you want to ensure that you will get ALL the Olympic broadcasts:

  1. cancel your single “record all” setting
  2. manually schedule each individual show using “record this showing”

My wife also likes watching these and when we started missing shows she made it known. I found this was the best way to just “make it work”.

I may have to do that. I just checked Plex to make sure it was working, and see now all the Olympics recordings for tonight have vanished from the DVR schedule! I’m refreshing my episode guide to see if that helps.

I can’t believe this is so flaky. I guess I’m back to creating 5 different Olympics libraries, morning, afternoon, evening, late, late late, and putting each recording in it’s appropriate slot and combining later.

Just want to throw my hat in here; I’ve been seeing recordings not start, almost exclusively prime time stuff (which, naturally, is all the final events). I’ve just gone in and manually set up each one individually; hopefully that works around the issue.

I’m sorry for my delayed response. Long day at work.

PMS Version: 1.23.5.4862 (I’ve run multiple update tests and am on the public channel)
PMS is running on a Windows 10 PC with i7 4790K 4Ghz, 32GB RAM, GTX 1070, multiple storage disks. Playback screenshots are taken from Web Player, but generally I play back on AppleTV, running the most recent versions of Plex and TVOS.

Yes, originally, I set show to record all events. It showed the record light on all files labeled “Tokyo Olympics” in the DVR Guide, but only recorded some of the files. I can’t remember the exact failures as I discovered the missing files quickly and jumped to the individual recordings within the first 24 hours (as other users have suggested in this forum). At the very least, it missed prime time and all the overnight repeats. I did not see any error messages. I saw the record light, on the guide, but they were not listed in the DVR Schedule, which is how I determined there was an issue.

This particular XML data shows what happens after I edit the file name to change the time…it linked to two separate differently named videos…

Here is a screen shot from today’s recordings…I have not modified the file names in any way at this point.
Pre-Play

During play

As you can see, I played the file with Rowing in the title. But the file that’s actually playing has no such note. Here are the files that is pulling from.

They all have the same title, date, and time, but different “episode” info. I can’t figure out why the system can’t properly differentiate between them.
Here is the XML from the pre-play file.

I am happy to try this, but I did restart the server already (without deleting the DVR). I can’t do this step tonight, as I need to finish my evening. I hope this info helps and answers most of the asked questions.. I’m happy to answer more questions and attempt to get logs. I’m even less available during the day tomorrow than I was today, however, but I plan to respond tomorrow night. Thank you again for your support.

Sorry for the extra edits, I forgot a photo above with the file names from the 7/28 recordings.
And the XML data for the pre-play/play file I included is now added as well.

I have the exact same setup as you - it is failing to record primetime, every day. Extremely disappointing.

Thank you for the tip, will try this.

I’d originailly set up a season pass for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, new recordings, figuring that some of the broadcasts were going to be rebroadcast. I discovered that some recordings were just flat out being missed, so I changed the season pass to all recordings. Right now, I have recordings on channels 11 and 165. I see recording indicators in the guide grid for channels 135 and 227, but no recording happening on those channels. I am definitely missing recordings.

I don’t know if this is an issue with the EPG or with something in PMS. Logs attached.

I too am missing primetime airings and can’t force them to record or override anything. So I had to cancel the (ironically-named) “Record all” and now every morning I sit down and mark all of the day’s episodes to record. One by one by one. It’s ridiculous.

Heaven help me if I miss one, my family will crucify me.

I set up single episode recordings 2 days ago and it’s been going well so far.

Wanted to call out for anyone also doing this that you need to check your recordings every morning for changes to the guide. Today I see two new Olympics episodes (women’s volleyball US ROC and men’s basketball US Czech) that weren’t there 2 days ago when I first set this up.

I’m testing Emby at the moment, I used to be monthly Plex Pass to support the devs, but they’re ignoring a lot of input their paying customers are coming with, now I have a test docker running emby on the side, time to move all my friends over. Plex staff keep ignoring our outcries against terrible design choices in their software.

In my opinion they’ve been resting on their laurels for too long to rake in the profits from the little efforts they made a long time ago and Emby is starting to getting to where Plex is now and it is very nice to see. Even UX looks a lot better in altland, and device support is getting there.

Right now my PMS can’t play any EAC3 (which is almost all newer releases) items through browser in chrome, because of a eac3 decoder bug, works fine in App, but not in browser.
Same files play beautifully in Emby.

I’ve just downloaded Channels DVR for testing since most of my problems have been in the DVR realm.

I’ll probably get to testing Emby eventually but just don’t have the time or patience at the moment…

On the plus side, I’m very happy with my HDHR Connect 4k tuner. Looking forward to testing ATSC 3 once it’s live in my area.

Having the exact same problems. Primetime won’t record…

I’ve noticed this in the middle of the show, and then select the option to record the liveTV I’m watching, and it still doesn’t show up. Highly frustrating. Wife is no begging to get cable back. Uhg.

@atomatth Is there any update on this issue? I just ran into a problem with Saturday recordings. I think I’ve worked it out. With the Winter Games in Beijing 2022 just around the corner, it would be nice to be able to just set the whole thing to record and get it all without thinking about it. Either that or the ability to manually record a channel, as many users have requested in other places, without relying on the guide at all (as many, if not all, other DVR’s allow). Thank you for the attention you have already provided, and I do hope this issue can be resolved.

An internal issue has been filed and devs are looking into it. I’m not able to provide any ETA.

Thank you for the response. I do hope this can be resolved in time for the next games in February. Thanks for your assistance over the past couple of weeks.

I have set the Plex DVR to record all remaining Paralympic airings (I missed the Opening Ceremonies, because I had my dates mixed up). I’m expecting 4 recordings to occur, however, I think they are all new, which is different than the “regular” Olympics where there were multiple re-airs of the same content. I’ll keep everyone updated.
