I just wanted to post this as it is just too weird. I have not been able to ascertain a hack. I kind of doubt I was hacked, my network is very secure. Likewise my Debian systems are very secure. That said, I wanted to post this so people are aware that this did actually happen.

On 04-13-2026 I was at the gym and listing to a playlist on my Pixel 6 phone running Plexamp via Tailscale.
About 1 hour into the playlist the song suddenly stopped playing, so I opened the phone to see Plexamp “skipping” through the rest of the playlist. I was done with my workout, so I just stopped the app and left.
The next day I tried using Plexamp out on the deck, and same problem. So I tried to open Plex and watch a movie in my library and that is when I got my first hint as to what the problem was - the movie showed “unavailable”. I tried another movie and saw the same “unavailable” message.
I logged into the server that hosts my plex media server and opened the Dolphin file manager and went to root to find the plex folder - it was completely gone.
I restored it from backup. Ran scan libraries and got things back, including the ability to play Music on Plexamp.
The next morning my cloud backup job started, this usually runs for maybe 5 minutes. This time I noticed the /home drive disk getting absolutely hammered and when I checked the backup status I noticed that .mkv files were getting uploaded. I had never see this before.
The path to these files was interesting as well - they are being copied from the following folder path /home//.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata…
I did a search and discovered this is a “kosher” locale and that plex media server runs under Proton so it makes a copy of the plex folder.
Just posting so people are aware. As I say, I have no idea what caused my /plex/ folder to be deleted, and as I was away at the time I know I did not do it, and my wife is a linux noob and would not be able to login to this server - she lacks the skills and also does not know the password.
I have found nothing in the logs to explain this either, so just FYI.
Regards,
Randy
