It’s a few clicks but I work around it by going to TV Shows then sorting “By Date Viewed”. It seems to work whether you choose “All” or “Unplayed”. It comes up pretty fast too which (in my opinion) negates the argument that increasing On Deck will slow things down. I think 50 or 60 would be reasonable or let the user configure it like we can with number of weeks to consider for on deck.
This shows ALL your library so the ultimate workaround.
I have been told that there is no actual limit on “On Deck” as that is controlled by “Weeks to consider fro On Deck” but there is a limit in all that clients that was arbitrarily chosen and set to 40. That is a maximum of 40 item are shown by any client and should you watch the last episode of any series in “On Deck” that series is removed and all the ones after it move up one spot and the 41st moves into position 40.
I was told that the limit of 40 was set to limit the load on the interface.
I do NOT buy that explanation. I have about 50-60 TV shows that I have watched at least an episode or two and that is how many should be “On Deck” and if I want to go look at the ones I watched a year or 18 months ago, the time to look at for On Deck is set at 104 weeks (Two years), all I should need to do is go to the end of the “On Deck” list on any client. I cannot do that because of an arbitrary excessively tiny number that is built into the clients.
A properly written display function “should” be able to handle an “On deck” list of any length. If it cannot then your programmers are either incompetent or lazy or they have been directed to limit it to 40.
This is one of the many unacceptable areas where Plex has placed an arbitrary limit on something because Plex thinks it is right without any real reason for the choice.
It is another case of the Plex way or the Highway.
I know you really do not care because you know you are right but you should just state that you know better than you users rather than trying to hide your arrogance behind reasonable sounding language.
NO CLIENT I USE CAN SHOW MY ON DECK LIST CORRECTLY!! Because of that what is true in the server is meaningless.
Except RARflix.
I guess you still have one of those - until Roku borks it with a new OS it won’t work under - and then there will be ZERO Plex apps that know what to do with On Deck.
No. I no longer have an instance of RARflix. To be honest, except for a couple of things like the On Deck limit, RARflix has became inferior, for my usage, to the regular client.
I loved RARflix for a very long time BUT it has not evolved to keep up with my needs.
To be further honest Plex is now just secondary for my usage to Emby. Something around 90-95% of my viewing is now with Emby.
And before anyone asks, Emby also has an arbitrary limit for “Next Up” (What Emby calls “On Deck”) The limit plays no part in my decision to use Emby it is the total lack of Plex’s responsiveness to users and, for me, the fact that Emby is both more stable and more functional overall is what makes Emby better for me.
BTW: Emby now has, in their beta, an optional popup synopsis when browsing “Next Up” on the home screen. That is the kind of thing that Emby adds in response to their user’s requests while Plex simply ignores what the users want.
I would agree and I only use RARflix to do things UNO can’t - like search my entire stable of movie libraries (17) for ALL the movies by an actor in ANY of them.
It was the only way I could find out that of the estimated 700 movies Bess Flowers appeared in I have 187 of them spread out over 4 libraries and as many decades. If the New and Improved Plex UNO can’t do that then it isn’t much of an improvement.
I always find it a pity if it fails on such a trifle. Plex is a great media server. And the apps look very good. The handling is the best I have seen so far. It is much better than Kodi (which I used before). But I’m also thinking about moving to Emby just because I’m watching more than 40 tv shows in a week. At the moment I’m watching some TV shows with the tv app from Apple TV because of this limit. Would these but rather watching with Plex. I really hope that this limit will be lifted in the future and I do not have to search for an application that finally meets my requirements. I’m sure Emby also has weaknesses and I might even regret the change.
Emby is a LOT better in many respects BUT the “On Deck” (Next up) limit is not a place where there is any real difference. In fact Emby’s limit in a number of their apps is only 20.
I find it so much better in most other areas that I can ignore that limit and brows by shows to pick up what is missing from “Next Up.” But the limit is NOT a reason to move to Emby.
My suggestion to most considering the change is to run both servers and force yourself to use Emby for everything for at least a month to get a good feel for what is better and what is not. Initially there is some frustration but most of that is because Emby is doing things differently. Different does not equal worse but different also does not equal better.
A one hour evaluation, or even a one week one, is not usually enough to be sure about systems as complex as Plex and Emby.
I like Emby better but I am still finalizing my evaluation and that has been ongoing for over a year.
lol, it would take me that long to get everyone over to it.
It would so suck if I did have everyone switched over and for some reason had to go back to plex. I would have so many headaches.
To be honest I didn’t find it too bad.
File naming is the same.
I just installed Emby along side Plex sent out the invites to friends/family in small batches and just asked for feedback on which they preferred.
I subscribe to Emby, as long as they keep responding positively to user input in order to get to something more closely resembling Plex - with all the irritants removed/improved Plex refuses to listen to users about. Emby’s not there, but their dogs are on the scent…
The real problem is that most of the time the advice of others does not really help. As I have said I prefer Emby and I highly recommend it BUT I do NOT use either Live TV or remote access and those are quite important to many people.
I will say the there are not a lot of post about problems involving those parts of Emby on the Emby forums and those that do appear are mostly quickly answered.
LiveTV is not for me. I have a TV for that. Not to mention I think I need a tuner for such a thing.
Remote access is a major part of my plex experience. Granted, I do not watch thing outside the house(no DATA plan, lol) but everyone else uses the crap out of it. If Emby doesn’t have RA then I’m out of ever trying it.
Holy moly there’s a lot of vitriol in this thread.
What I was trying to do above is figure out where exactly the limit lay, when I asked “do Plex clients show the same 40 shows on the home screen? As I said, I don’t believe we do anything to artificially limit.”
When I woke up this morning, I looked through the server code some more, armed with @JuiceWSA’s data on RARFlix being the standout (thanks for that) and found that there actually is a limit in the server of 40 (for performance reasons). The reason why RarFlix is “exempt” is because it uses an older API which predated hubs, without the limit. Given how easy it is to do, I’ll do the same thing we did for the On Deck window and make it an advanced preference. Not sure what release it’ll be in, but given it’s such a simple change it’ll almost certainly be in the next release, but if not in the one after that.
@Elijah_Baley ~ tone done the drama, there’s no need for stuff like “If it cannot then your programmers are either incompetent or lazy”. We’re all humans here, let’s be nice to each other.
Since you already have RARflix up on blocks in your yard find out why ONO (or any other Plex App) can’t look through ALL existing movie libraries for returns on an actor image click - since RARflix has done this for quite some time.
After that give me a way to remove ‘Movie Reviews’, ‘Because You Watched’ and ‘More With’ and I’ll stop being so irritable.
You’re getting me excited! What advanced preferences do you speak of? What version of PMS would I need to see and/or take advantage of said ‘advanced preference’ ?
RA as in other people besides you can logon and play your content or RA as in the admin has the ability the login and play stuff and also change server setting?
It doesn’t exist yet, but as I said, one of the next versions. Since the preferences czar wasn’t awake, I’m just making it a (visible) advanced preference for now, so you’ll see it Plex/Web alongside other advanced preferences (Can’t guarantee it won’t change to hidden, but hey, at least you’ll Have The Power).
