At present I have 123 different unwatched tv shows
My plan was to add all of these shows to “on deck” by watching the 1st couple of minutes of each show - that way I could just shuffle all my shows when feeling lazy and did not want to pick a show to watch and it would shuffle excactly what episode I was up to.
I changed the plex setting “weeks to consider for on deck” to 1000 weeks but when I attempted this it still only adds 52 different shows to “on deck”
Each client has their own limit. The On Deck is generated when the client requests it from the server, so it’s not just pulling a pre-generated list.
So while no there isn’t a limit to on deck, only xx items will be displayed. As you watch an entire show/movie (depending on the client) the next item (based on watched date) will be added to the list.
You can put in a feature request in that forum, but from my understanding the larger the number of shows and movies being shown the more taxing the request is for the server. So I don’t know how easy/hard it would be, or how much it would affect the server performance.
I to would like say 100. I have the roku client and the nvidia shield client also and they have different numbers “on deck” (from the same server!) Apple tv4 appears the least !!
I have been told and kind of understand that there are actually two ways “On Deck” gets generated in the server. One is limited (The newest and the one most clients use) to about 40 entries. The other (used by Plex web and older clients) is only limited by the “Weeks to consider for On Deck” setting in the server. Currently my Web interface shows about 75 but clients like my Roku, Pi and Fire TV only have 40.
I do not know why there are two different ways of accessing “On Deck” but it seems there are.
BTW: My “Weeks to consider for On Deck” is set at 104 or two years.
I agree that 100 makes more sense but actually I think all clients should respect the “Weeks to consider for On Deck” setting.
Plex made the choice to go with a more limited “On Deck” for some reason but I fail to grasp what that reason could possibly be. It would make more sense to limit the weeks than it does to have two different server side “On Decks” and limit the main one most folks will use to a paltry 40 items.
What about filtering your movies (or separately TV) for unwatched and save that filter as a playlist. Then you have ready access via playlists on your home page and are not limited to how many are displayed? Also, the play list updates as you add/remove the watched status. Just a thought. Works on my AppleTV, my Vizio tv, and web clients but I don’t know about the other platforms.

While that would, I think, work (It even would be a “smart” playlist so it would update) it is extra work and playlists have some serious limitations like, on many if not most) clients, it has an inability to resume a previously started video at the stopped point.
I have yet to hear any believable explanation as to the “why” behind limiting “On Deck” to 40 is at all a good idea. When I use the RARflix channel on my Roku (it uses the old method) I do not see any slowdown or other negative impact to having the larger “On Deck.” 40 is just too small and I would like to see more. Of course, since Plex rarely changes their collective minds on this kind of design decision I do not really expect much to happen in the way of a change and I can live with it. If I could not live with it I would use another product but I like Plex best. It is just not quite perfect.
EDIT: Meant to add that “unwatched” is not the same as “On Deck” and the order of “On Deck” is also important to me. I do not use “On Deck” for movies and my Movie libraries are not included in my Dashboard and TV series’ “Next Episode” is what I really want in “On Deck.”

Correct. In the old method, each list of Dashboard items (OnDeck, Recently Added, etc.) is generated individually, then each item is sent to the client. For speed purposes, there is a limit I believe of 200 items that will get generated for each list. So if a client received multiple lists of 200 each, it could take a while to parse out the data and display the information.
In the new method, all the entries for a page/screen is generated in 1 shot. this allows the page/screen to get refreshed with less overhead. This is why a manual “Refresh” option is not being used anymore. The screens should just do it properly (and quickly with this method). Again, for speed purposes, each individual section (OnDeck, Recently Added, etc.) is limited to 40 items to prevent the entire list from being too long.

As being the OP in this thread, This is how i have some-what over come what i was trying to achieve.
As the screenshot shows tho.. i have to manually do this once a week to keep the playlist up to date, By doing this tho i can shuffle and play every unwatched and up to date episode.
