I’ve been considering adding a tv tuner and DVR. Is there any reason I cant use the same PC with the TV tuner and as my DVR and server? Is this even possible?
It is the only way if you are using a tuner add-on card.
The documentation is cloudy on this subject. I see all the compatible equipment but nothing says I can load some dvr software and handle this my self. any suggestions on DVR software?
Oh wait. I thought you wanted to add a Plex DVR. My above answer relates to that.
You can combine a 3rd party DVR with Plex. If the software stores the recordings unencrypted, you can at least point a Plex ‘Other Videos’ library to their folder.
If you also want meta data for the recordings, you’d have to find a way to
a) name the files automatically according to Plex’s requirements https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/media-preparation/ or
b) provide the metadata yourself in Kodi-compatible .nfo files. You’ll need to install the .nfo importer agent to use these. Metadata agents for exported XBMC library
If you want to run the DVR on the same machine as Plex server, you may want to provide plenty of CPU power so that Plex won’t starve the DVR software of CPU resources.
I did mean I wanted to add a plex dvr. Im just confused on the process. So is the DVR software a cpu hog. I may want to get a separate machine. My desire is to get a pcie tv tuner and use my hard drive for the dvr. One PC not multiple.
Then my initial answer above is applicable.
That depends on the digital tv format that is broadcast in your area.
If they still use MPEG2 or H.264, then you can make do with a regular middle class cpu. (by today’s standards)
If there is already H.265 used in your area, then you’ll need a cpu with more oomph, like an upperclass Intel Core i5. (also by today’s standards - not an i5 model that is already 3 years old!)
Is there a place I can find out about towers and distance, antenna? all that kind of stuff to decide the best devices for my house?
That depends on where you live.
Take a look at the links at the bottom of this page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/
I have a Hauppauge Quad-HD card. The Plex Media Server was installed on that PC. It did the recording, managed the EPG etc. I’m a very heavy user of my PC., particularly gaming. The gaming and recording never seemed to bother one another. I had big problems with the EPG not loading properly and after a month, I finally gave up and asked for a refund. But I was very happy with the performance. You do need to have good throughput on the hard-drive. I use a SSD for my system drive and recordings went to a traditional hard drive – this might have helped the gaming and the recording to get along with one another.
