Online hosting options

I am currently hosting my files on a QNap 4-bay NAS, but my third drive bay has failed and I don’t have the money to buy a new server. I am considering moving my files to an online solution but not sure where to start. I’m currently at 4 TB worth of files. Can anyone recommend a solution that won’t break the bank?

I got hit by the Deadbolt fiasco with no backup and I really don’t want to have to rebuild my database a third time.

Please help.

Unfortunately most online storage will not allow you to host your Plex files. You can run the server in the cloud for personal use but hosting media goes against the TOS of every service I have seen. They just don’t want to risk it. They have no way to prove your files are legitimate backups of media you own. Having the backups is legal, making the (decrypted) backups is illegal. Most cloud storage is also far more expensive over time than hosting your own.

Because you already have the NAS and are willing to spend on monthly storage solution, I would recommend picking up some replacement drives and pay for them over time. You’re essentially doing the same thing as paying for the cloud hosting but at least you will own the drives and be able to free up that cost once they are paid off.

I have purchased an additional drive, but sadly the drive bay has gone bad with the server. Buying a new QNap is currently not in my budget. I guess I just ride without a helmet for the time being, hoping another drive or bay doesn’t go bad.

I would try to pull a backup of your most important files.
Then save some money and replace the failed HDD. On the long term I would buy another drive to either replace the older ones or use it a s a cold spare.
