Optimal setup for a separate 4K library?

Hi everyone,

I have started adding 4K content to my Plex server. From what I have read, it is better to have a separate library for 4K content, so to avoid transcoding by remote users.

However, to avoid splitting my media in two libraries (which is inconvenient), I have come with the following setup:

On my drive, 4K and HD content are separated in two folders:

Videos/Movies/HD/...
Videos/Movies/UHD/...

In Plex, I create two libraries:

  • A library for me and users who can stream 4K content with both the HD and the UHD folders. If I have a movie in both the HD and UHD folder, Plex recognize it is the same movie and let me choose which version I want to play. (I am aware that this is not the recommended way to handle multiple versions, but it seems to work fine.)
  • A library with only the HD folder, for users who cannot stream 4K content.

I have made a few tests and it seems this setup works fine. However, before I begin reorganizing all my media this way, I just wanted to check if there is anything that I am forgetting and that may create problems.

What do you think? Do some of you use a similar setup?

Thanks!
