Optimizing on a different computer

Can I optimize movies on a stronger pc and then move the optimized files to my NAS with the server on. Would it work?

Yes and no.

Plex doesn’t have a built-in way to offload that process.

The simplest choice is to use Plex to Optimize the media, and just … wait. Plex’s Optimize produces highly compatible files.

You can create additional versions on another computer, and then store them alongside your media. These don’t behave exactly the same as versions you’ve Optimize'd inside Plex, but it works well. Many people use this for 4K/1080P/HDR/SDR/HEVC/AVC versions.

If you’re really adventurous, you could also try the UnicornTranscoder, but that’s a Whole 'Nother Thing.

Thanks Volts

My plex server is on a NAS with really low processing power. To optimize 2tb of movies is a never ending process. Let a lone just a few movies. If I copy these files on another computer, set a plex server there and optimize the files. Then move these files to NAS’s folder of optimized versions, would the server be able to detect and start using them?

Sort of.

If you Optimize within Plex, it knows about the Optimized Versions and treats the files differently. You can’t (easily) get Plex to “adopt” the Optimized Versions produced on another Plex instance.

But you can grab the “Optimized” files from another system, and then manually copy & rename them, following the “Multi-Version Movies” instructions above.

Does that make sense?
