Option to Customize Remote Control Behavior for Playback

I would like to request an option to customize the behavior of the “select” button on remote controls during playback in the Plex app for Android.

Currently, the first press of the “select” button brings up the on-screen controls, and a second press pauses or resumes playback. While this is useful in some scenarios, it can feel unintuitive for users who expect a single press to pause/resume playback directly.

Proposed Solution:

Add a setting in the Plex app’s Player or Remote Control configuration to allow users to customize this behavior.

Provide two options for the “select” button behavior:

  1. Default: First press shows on-screen controls, second press pauses/resumes.

  2. Alternate: Single press directly pauses/resumes playback.

This small change could improve the playback experience for many users, especially those accustomed to other streaming platforms where a single button press pauses/resumes.

Thank you for considering this request!

If your remote control has a dedicated Pause/Play button, it should work as such.

I have two smart TVs with two different remotes. In all the other streaming apps (Netflix, Disney, Prime) clicking the middle button (Okay/Enter button) pauses/resumes.
Plex is the only one that the first click shows the controls, and the second pauses/resumes.

There’s already an existing suggestion to change the default click behavior for the big screen apps (Android TV). I recommend you comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.

Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.

You can close this thread. I have voted for the original
