I have a number of old movies that are part of a sequence (Charlie Chan, The Thin Man, etc.). The naming instructions for movies does not mention the ability to put all of the movies in a series in a folder so that Plex will display a single top level entry that I can click to drill down to the individual movies as you can with TV programs. If I can’t use folders I assume the best way to group the movies in a series is to create a collection. Is there a better way? Thanks.
it depends if you want metadata, and if that metadata is in the tvdb or moviedb
if they are in the tbdb as part of a series, then you can put in them in a TV library, named as a tv show with applicable seasons and episodes.
if they are just stand alone movies that are related, then yes collections is the normal method of relating them.
finally, if for some reason there is no established source of metadata, you can put them in an ‘other videos’ type library that you can organize however you want, but will not pull any metadata from online. (normally this would be like home videos or other esoteric media)
for something like @ https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Collection-After-Another-Shadow/dp/B0009GX1C4
You would simply name/organize them on your storage individually and create a collection tag for them (if plex doesn’t automatically add them to the same collection).
Ok. Thanks.
also, don’t forget you can group movies and tvs and audio via collections as well.
even though they are in separate libraries, if they are in the same named collection, they will show up together in the collection, divided by library.
There are several threads on collections, you might see some good examples and screen shots there.
Thanks. I just found out that collections can span libraries. Nice feature.
