I’m working on putting some music videos into their own library in Plex. I don’t need to have them linked to music in my Music library - totally separate. They’re all mp4 files and I’ve done the work putting the metadata I want into these files: Title, Artist, Director, and Year. Additionally, all files are named as such (using Mp3tag for help):
%title% - %artist% - %year% - %director%.mp4
The only metadata value that seems to be reaching Plex is the Title. The rest are not mapping. I understand that Year might not be enough on its own, but I noticed that Movies have Year. What am I missing to help select the metadata values that Plex is using, and then how am I meant to map the values from the files to my Plex server?
It’s been some time since I’ve been playing with this.
Checking my library, it appears very little of the information will be displayed on the details page of an other-video item (mostly title and summary).
Plex will also pick up the release date (in my files, this is embedded as <year>-<month>-<day>T<hour>:<minute>:<seconds>Z (e.g. 2025-04-05T16:32:00Z) and show it when you edit the file.
In addition I’ve embedded a list of actors (it’s family videos, so this is basically just family member names). Those don’t show but can be used when filtering the library.
[edit: I forgot… the “Album” tag did end up as Collection ]
When experimenting with all that, I filled all attributes my app could embed in the video files and entered the name of the tag (where possible) to verify, where the metadata will show up inside Plex.
Here’s the results of a quick test.
I’m using Subler on my Mac – they sometimes use “human readable” titles for the tags, so you this might not be a perfect match for mp3tag.
