I like to have my data saved and embedded within the video so that I don’t have to rely on Plex if something happens, or move my data to another location, or really just even to save me time in having to edit each entry one at a time using the Plex editor which is not sufficient with hundreds or thousands of video files. I’ve spent a lot of hours trying to understand what and how Plex will read and use metadata tags embedded within a video. There are probably other tags to be discovered and I can’t find any publication on which embedded tags Plex will read and import. I hope this helps a few of you out there trying to use the Plex system for music videos that Plex should natively support as a library type ![]()
Plex Music Videos
My Server Version = 1.40.0.7998
Library Type = Other Videos
My Video File Type = MP4
USING Mp3tag Application
TAG = PLEX
TITLE = Title
TITLESORT (Extended Tag) = Sort Title
YEAR (YYYY-MM-DD) = Originally Available
PODCASTDESC (Extended Tag) = Summary
GENRE = Genres
ALBUM = Collections
The YEAR tag must be in YYYY-MM-DD format. I usually set the month and day to 01 like 2023-01-01.
Use “/” to have mutilple entries (stumbled on this by accident and seems to work)
Ex: GENRE = “Pop/Rock” will have the video show under “Categories” view under Pop and Rock.
I use the ALBUM tag for artist name so my music videos are separated into collections by Artist automatically.
If there are multiple artists for a music video, I use the “/” in the ALBUM tag to have it show up in multiple collections.
EX: “Meant To Be” video by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line => ALBUM = “Bebe Rexha/Florida Georgia Line”
I also enter artist names in the PODCASTDESC extended tag so the artist names show up under “Library” view in “Detail View”.
EX: “Bebe Rexha, Florida Georgia Line”. If I include a summary, I add that text after artist name in the tag.

It does seem that after I do a “Scan Library Files” to add new Music Videos, I have to sometimes force a “Refresh All Metadata” to
get the “Originally Available” date to show correct Year from the YEAR tag.(Or Refresh the Metadata for just a selected video)
I have all my music videos under one directory by artist name that matches the same name for my music audio files. I update my “Extras”
setting “Global music videos path” to my music video directory. This way my music videos also show up as extras in my music library.
