Outside Home network

Hi there, I tried searching but couldn’t find an exact answer to my question and hope you guys don’t mind, I’m sure it’s been asked before.

I’ve set up plex home and added 3 users. 2 of these are my in-laws who stay with me for a few months and then go home for the rest of the year. Obviously, we have a lot of shared media and considering their age, I didn’t think of creating plex accounts for them (another password to remember, forget about managers).

So, my basic question is: would they be able to access my plex server once they leave my home (outside lan network).

Secondly, I’ve slowly been creating or converting my media to 1080p/4k hevc. They all have nvidia shields, and my plex server is on a NAS. Considering they have shields, there shouldn’t be any transcoding issues correct. Right now everything works fine with the 3 shields at home (2 will go with them), I just wasn’t sure considering the change in network and how/when plex decides to transcode. TIA.

If you are creating managed user accounts for them then they need to stay sign in to the device you set up for them they cannot log into any other. Yes they will still be able to access remotely like anyone you might share with assuming you have remote access set up.

But we highly suggest you have them create free Plex account to share with to they can log out/in and sign in other devices if they need to. If they get a new phone for example they will not be able to sign in or sign in on some other device at their house.

Nvidia shield can play HEVC but if they are not local then network speed may come into play and quality may need to be lowered to lower bitrate which would necessitate transcoding.

If I gave them the password to the account (have no reason not to trust them), wouldn’t that solve the issue? Considering I’m the only one with the family vids that they’re interested in, and if they’re only going to use the shield to watch things, then this shouldn’t be an issue right?

and assuming two 1080p hevc streams being transcoded due to network limitations, would a 10k passmark be enough? Am thinking of replacing the nas with a server.

If you trust them yeah it would. With your password however they can get into the admin settings on server if using website. but if you are sure they would have no reason to use it then OK. I would probably just make a fake gmail account ( or from whatever service) and just make an account for them personally.

It depends if that is a 5 Mbps or 30 Mbps and what they are transcoding down to. For the 2 @ 5, 10k is huge. For 2 @ 30, 10k might be ok.
