I’m building a new Plex server. I already had my movie library using the convention, “Movie Title [Year].mp4”. Everything seemed to import fine. However, later I learned the naming convention suggests “Movie Title (Year).mp4” Does it matter whether I use brackets or parenthesis? Do I make the effort to rename my library files with ( ) instead to avoid any other automation or features expectations?
it won’t until it does, the recommended configuration is always the safest way. I would personally use the recommended going forward and then if something in the old media stuffs up worry about it then.
Anything in [ ] is ignroed.
If you put 2001 A Space Odyssey [ChuckPa is an idiot] (1968).mkv
It will be matched as if 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968).mkv
( ) provides the year.
It’s a nice field to have because you can make notes for yourself about the media.
Supplemental.
While I recognize a naming convention has been established,
there is an easy way to rename them all in a heartbeat.
Specifically ‘FileBot’ (I use it but there are others).
I use Linux so my parent directory and path separator are different .
I use /nas/movies/{n} ({y})/{n} ({y})
I then drag & drop a few files into the left pane,
lookup via TMDB or IMDB (my choice)
filebot takes the names, performs the verification lookup, and proposes new names.
If there is ambiguity, it gives me a popup to resolve with.
When all are done, I click “Rename” and it dutifully starts renaming and putting things into compliance.
FileBot has a lot of extensions so you can add other info in [extra info here] if you want.
I can rename/movie/restructure hundreds of movies in less than a minute.
