Photo library: Sort on "Date Taken" within folders

+1 would love to be able to sort pictures in a folder on most recent first / oldest first based on date taken. Maybe other prefer on name or something else, but a bit more options would be great

Plex Support - is anyone listening?

Sorting photos and videos by date is a basic feature that should never have been omitted. Come on, after all these years why is this request still being ignored?

Please get the basics right before working on non-essential updates.

At least give us some response to acknowledge if its on your development list.

It’s ridiculous that this still doesn’t work.

Someone from Plex - I’d like an EXPLANATION as to why you have allowed such a simple feature to languish. It’s low hanging fruit - this is such simple functionality, that when absent, makes the entire Photo system in Plex completely useless.

I want to know WHY this doesn’t work and WHEN it WILL work.

Plex devs, come on…add this feature ASAP. I just downloaded 30 gigs of photo’s from my phone only to find out they are all sorted wrong. How is this possible? You guys are dev masters and photo’s cannot be sorted by date taken INSIDE a folder? Come on…please make it possible asap.

Bump!

Every time I see new features introduced, I frown upon this lacking feature.

Bump…

I’m using Plex more and more having cleaned out my DVD boxes from the shelf and I’d LOVE to use it more for photos but I just can’t without some updates to the interface (like being able to sort photos within a folder at least).

It takes a while to realise that Plex doesn’t actually provide support even though it takes u our money. The chances of a “plex employee” answering a forum post vary very low. Mostly if they do answer it’s to no effect.

The ability to sort by date taken us a fundamental feature of a photo library. Complaints about the absence of this feature go back years.

I seem to recall that one suggestion was to manually update all of the meta data manually. That’s insulting.

The absence of this feature plus Plex refusal to even comment on it seriously damages Plex reputation.

Hi,
Just invested in Plex + Pass, transferred my 10000+ pictures into libraries, organised into albums, just to find that control of the sorting in album is totally manual - not possible to sort by time.

Unbeliable lack of functionality and if not solved will make me look for a another photo management quickly.

I will give it a final try on some of the advanced xml setting mentioned here - https://support.plex.tv/articles/201105343-advanced-hidden-server-settings/

but suspects that option would have been mentioned in the thread above.

Hello,
I’m newby user of Plex, it’s a wonderfull app but the sort of photo by date from the meta data seems have a bug, Usually I sort my photos and movies with a little java script using the Library https://tika.apache.org/ to extract the meta data and this Library works very well, perhaps the plex team can use it to improve this functionnality ?
Thank you,

+1 Absolutely agree on this. I’m new to Plex, but could not believe that it was so difficult to pick an album cover from among the photos already in the album. Concerns me that such a simple but important interface issue has gone unaddressed to so long.

I’m only a couple weeks into Plex, and paying the monthly toll until I decide this is what I want. Issues like this (simple to address, and with significant usability impact) shouldn’t be ignored for years. I mean look how old this thread is!

Might need to check out Emby.

The only work around that I’ve found is to manually create a tag that is unique to all the photos in the folder (or album, for that matter, since this problem also applies to albums). For example, I have an album of 725 photos taken at Yellowstone National Park over the span of several days. It’s easy enough in this case to select all of the photos by selecting dates in the Timeline, and then tag them with “Yellowstone”. In your case, the tag might be “Folder ABC” after opening the folder and selecting all of the images. Once the tag is created, go to the Library View and do a filtered search by tag (the tag “Yellowstone N.P.” or “Folder ABC” appears in the associated drop down menu), the results of the search are then sortable by “Date Taken” in either ascending or descending order.
Then, if you would like an album created from these results, select all of images and add them to a new album. The images will be sorted according to how the filter results were last displayed. Alas, if you want to insert images into the album later on, then you need to start from scratch by doing the following:

  1. Empty out the existing album (open the album, select all images & click “Remove from Album” at the upper right).
  2. Tag the new image(s) to be included with the same tag as those in the original set.
  3. Perform the filter by tag.
  4. Sort the images by “Date Taken” (sort again by “Date Taken” to reverse the order), or by any of the other parameters.
  5. Add all of the images back into the empty album.

+1 Plex support, why can this not be fixed? Is there a feature request for this?
Photo app has in general a lack of basic functionality, f.e. share albums among other functions.

Not being able to sort photos by date taken is ridiculous.
I cancelled by Plex Pass because of this last year.
Just thought I’d check in to see if anyone at Plex is listening to what their customers want.
Obviously not. Plex is just becoming a joke now. I’d love to return to Plex but I have no choice but to stick with Kodi for the forseeable future.

Please implement this feature. I want to be able to sort by date taken.

Plex Photo llibrary is a great tool, one of the best gallery self hosted solution. But the lack of this basic feature is very sad, and make it almost unusable.
I too gather photos of different devices in one folder called “Crazy Summer 2020”.

It would be great to have a sorting option in each folder and album (or playlist, still confused by album/playlist)

@LegeDoos it may be necessary to add the tag photos-library to give this request more visibility.

I thought this had to be some mistake, but surely this should be implemented after 4 years of user complaints.

Please add… it is crazy to not be able to sort images by “date taken”…

4 years old topic and still no response! Should’ve looked this up before signing up.
