Definitely need the download photos option added back. That is a big use case for me and my family.
Thanks for the big update @aubrey.wodonga
Will you be adding the ability to show a slideshow of photos (with shuffle) and then AirPlay so we can cast that slideshow to a ATV?
That makes me think - is Photos available on ATV?
@dklein is this a new issue, or were you experiencing the same (or similar) in the previous app version? Are you able to select a library from the library picker (via the āno libraryā button in the top left)? If not, could you please provide app logs to help troubleshoot (User menu
ā Settings
ā About
ā Download Logs
). Feel free to DM them to me if youād prefer.
@kfitz199 is this specifically on the photo viewer screen? If so, weāre aware that the viewer landscape layout isnāt great. I hope to make some improvements there in the near future.
@kfitz199 and @EricD1973 when you say ādownload to the phoneā, are you talking about an offline mode in the app, the ability to actually save files from the server to your phone storage (for e.g. sharing to other apps etc), or something else? For the sake of making sure weāre tracking requests correctly, Iād like to know what youāre looking for
@clowg Iād actually hoped to implement slideshow playback for 2025.1.0, but unfortunately ran into some edge cases that wouldāve delayed the update even further, so had to hold it back sadly. I hope to continue working on it shortly.
As for AirPlay/Chromecast support, as much as Iād love to see it, to the best of my knowledge itās currently not planned. With that said, we are continuing to explore and discuss our best options for photo libraries on TVs, though I donāt have anything concrete to share just yet.
The ability to actually save files from the server to my phone.
Thanks, Iāve filed an issue internally to track this request!
Just came to say the same thing. Just want an easy way to save to my phone.
Gotcha, thanks for the feedback!
The updated Photos app for Android that released today is a huge improvement, thank you. It went from not working at all ā black screens ā to working fine, albeit in a quick test. Appreciated.
Yes, the photo viewer screen. I open the app, tap the first photo in recently added, rotate the phone to landscape and swipe to the next photo. On the fourth photo and after - a color background with no photo.
Thanks for the extra detail, I can reproduce the issue here. Iāll take a look!
Or you could just fold all this back in to the main app like most of your furious paying users want and save a whole lot of time and money.
EXACTLY!!! THIS ^^^^^
I can understand how it may seem weād save time or money by folding them together, but the truth is that this isnāt the case.
The apps are built with separate experiences in mind, and with different requirements and constraints. Keeping them separate, but sharing some common logic and components as we are now allows for much faster development, reduced risk of regressions between updates, and user experience optimisations that make the most sense for each library type.
The latter point in particular is what Iām most excited about. Weāre able to do things now that were never possible previously, and weāre just getting started.
This is corporate delusion. You have alienated your core users and your reviews across platforms are plummeting despite the good will and affection so many of us had for your service, such good faith and trust shone in your 5 star reviews of the past. Lucky you had those stars to ratio the current deluge. Read the room already.
Your team has greatly underestimated the emotional toll your shift in breaking this collective space into pieces has done to many families, mine included, and the elderly in my community. Nobody asked for this. You shattered a wonderful hub of many families favorite home movies, related songs and family photos into 3 apps: 1 broken, 1 decent but unnecessary and 1 so half-baked it should be an embarrassment.
You then demand that we recognize your brilliance like weāre some plebes who canāt grasp the implications of your overarching capital intentions. Iām fine with your unifying code, I understand the technical advantages for future updates, and frankly charge what you will.
But unless you are simultaneously porting all three apps to every single freaking platform and guiding your more vulnerable and physically challenged users through this process, then you have not just broken their universal hub, you also break their hearts and minds with unnecessary stress and confusion. Your hubris and indifference to our multiple concerns and scathing reviews is alarming.
Get over yourselves. Keep your precious 3 apps if you must, but return our photos and music and stop being Sonos 2.0.
Many thanks @aubrey.wodonga !
A step - or rather, several steps - in the right direction.
If I may suggest something.
- Make Library the default view when opening the app or even better, make it a setting, something like in the Experience app:
Settings -> Experience -> Default library view -> Browse/Recommended
In the Photos app it could be:
Settings -> Experience -> Default opening view -> Library/Timeline/Recommended
It would also be more consistent with the Experience app.
- The iOS icon could also use some love
There are a couple of bugs mentioned in this thread about rotating to landscape and the fourth or fifth photo being replaced with a background gradient but I can see, you are aware of that.
Anyway, kudos. I know youāve been working hard but you have something to show for it.
Thanks again
I am not able to load my photo timeline still, even with the new update.
It would be good to be able to download/save the photos and mobile videos from the Plex Photos app, to your camera stream (as the main Plex app allowed). It is a shame that is missing as an option. As well as a photo stream backup feature.
Is there a planned release date for the photos upload feature? Without the ability to upload photos to our servers this is a pointless app.
I see updates are ate least happening which is generally good. When will the primary purpose of the application be delivered though? As in the ability to upload from mobile to our servers? Without that function this app is a fancy explorer with preview mode.
This is a bit awkward, as your āprimary purposeā is my, āI have absolutely no need for thatā.
I have an UnRaid server running Plex that I save my photos from my camera onto after developing them in Lightroom. Thus as the photos are on my camera, then my PC, then my server, the āuploadā is already handled adequately.
For me I actually see a great need for a download/save feature to get the photos off my server and onto my phone for sharing. For others I can see that is considered pointless as the photos are already on their phone!
