Photos Beta Feedback

Also in agreement. With still no ability to download and share from your own server, it is a non-functional embarrassment.

Is there no response to feedback here? What is the point of this post?

Hey there PCTD

I’m new at Plex and diving in across all fronts, so to speak. Would love to know how you’re currently getting Plex Server to let you build your slideshows with a music playlist, and then show them to the TV and its sound system
I can get one, or the other, to play, but not at the same time.

Thanks!

I like the direction of Plex by introducing this Photos app. It seems like it tried to follow the success path of plexamp.

However, there is one FRUSTRATING “bug” in Plex Photos: it seems to prioritize swipe left/right over zoom in/out almost all the time. Thus, I’ve had a really bad experience trying to zoom into my photos
taking me multiple attempts to make it work, sometimes I just can’t do it at all. It is so annoying in this day and age when zooming is such a common and simple feature available everywhere. I’m using an Android 15 phone (Sony Xperia 1 V).

I noticed the classic Plex app dropped support for playing music (in favor of plexamp) and photos (in favor of Plex Photos). I totally agree with that move towards plexamp, after years of maturing. However, Plex Photos is still beta, with a frustrating bug described above. It seems very early for such a move, leaving us without a Plan B to browse through photos when Plex Photos doesn’t work correctly.

I hope the Plex team addresses the zooming issue with the Photos app soon.

I second this bug, it is indeed very annoying.

This app sadly seems to be abandoned though, I have even emailed my frustrations to the main Plex support address and just been told, “I’ve passed your feedback along to our team. Thanks for your interest in Plex!”

Yeah, cheers mate -_-

I think I discovered a new flaw in their plan when Plex needed me to reset my password because of the data breach. Instead of being able to sign back in once on my phone, I needed to do it four times. Once each for Plex (video), Plex Dash, Plex Amp, and Plex Photos.

Was the Photo app dev team laid off this last round?

Every video taken in portrait mode has an upside down thumbnail in the Plex browser page and iOS app.

I like to have sub folders within a Photo library. This approach works will to separate photos and videos into specific events during a trip. These sub folders appear at the bottom of all the media. They should appear at the top as do folders through Windows.

I have discovered that you can see the moderators via this link: https://forums.plex.tv/g/moderators

Whilst @aubrey.wodonga may have been removed from the Photos project (who knows), they do still seem to be visiting the the forums at least (if not vocally).

Was this app abandoned?

the last update was 3 months ago and nothing works in the app. You can’t load timelines if you have more than like 5000 photos.

just curious because it’s getting annoying to not have an avenue to see my photos anymore. It’s been over a year since I have been able to properly view my photos.

This is exactly what I expected. When singular independent apps do not have the usage and data metrics that Plex Inc. wishes to have, they then can consider it an app not worthy of maintaining and then therefore shut down further future development. Leaving a void for Plex users to have to find an alternative. They want this to happen so they don’t have to drain their dev resources.

Is it worth pinging other devs to see if they can resuscitate the thread? For a “Photos Beta [App] Feedback” thread we’re rather adrift here.

@atomatth maybe?

Not sure what you mean. Users are providing feedback in a feedback thread. Keep doing that. We do actively review these threads even if we are not actively responding in them. Having all/most of this feedback in a central location/thread makes it easier for us to pick up the work needed. So again, keep providing your feedback.

Plex has never provided any kind of roadmap or list of priorities before but there was a Fireside question/answer about this here. There was also some questions/answers about Photos in that thread, one example being this one.

The latest comms on Photos can be found here: Music & Photos are BACK! Check them out in the new Roku Preview!. I don’t have any other information to share on this topic, unfortunately.

My guess is that they got so much pushback on splitting the apps apart for devices like the TV that they had to go back to the drawing board and decide how to handle their plans for a shared codebase.

Much appreciated, thank you. I hope I can speak for all users on here to say we had been previously very excited by the rapid responses from @aubrey.wodonga that made us feel like the app was progressing quickly back to its original state.

We were all initially stung by the descision to split the Photos App off and and remove features that we were using previously, so it felt like an admission from Plex that this should be rectified as soon as possible.

When those dev replies stopped it seemed like even that dialogue had closed and we were left with an app that wasn’t as good as it was previously. Removing a working app to transition it into a Beta version with less functionality is still a very suprising descision.

I look forward to seeing where we go from here, and hope an app update will arrive soon.
