When signing into the app, it brings up the embedded web view for sign in. When I go to get my MFA code, I’m back at the sign in page. I figured out a workaround but not optimal
My photos are shown with a false time-indication: When watching information it shows the time 3 hours earlier than the actual time the photo was taken. That must be a bug. Another problem is when scrolling through pictures (the phone vertically up) and you pick a picture for closer inspection and turns the phone horizontally, then there is no picture shown.
I am not even able to easily sign in into the app.
Normally I would first enter email and password, then it is requesting the 2FA code. For that I have to leave the app, go to the 2FA app, copy the code with enough time and return to the sign in page of Plex Photo.
When I come back to Plex Photo, the app returns into the Sign In stage, requiring again to enter the login information.
I have been able to beat it by writing down the 2FA code first when it starts the 60 seconds clock, then copy the password, then sign in and entered the written down 2FA code. It is super inconvenient and you have to be fast, this needs to be fixed.
No auto-upload of photos from phone to PMS?
No facial recognition?
Big two features which I must only assume are on there way.
-
Photo syncing is a key feature as both a backup and a way of keeping the database up to date.
-
With photo syncing there should be options of which folders / photos to sync and control over which users can sync
-
Facial and other recognition (like pets and places) would be great.
Is there a specific format / folder structure for photos? Or a recommend way?
Don’t want to sort photos only for the app to want to organise different if/when photo uploads are possible
Currently downloading 400GB photos from Google Photos, it’s getting to expensive to upgrade to the 2TB plan, and I have a NAS with 3 x 18 TB (raid 5), highly anticipating the upload from mobile client.
I gave up after more than a week of scanning, that caused drops and delays from all PMS access points, despite being on hardware that plex could have used more CPU/RAM etc. Deleting the library caused PMS to hang with a database loop. Had to force PMS closed and restart. Maybe one day this will work for large databases, not now.
Uhh, worse than that. After restart PMS decided the delete library function wasnt done, reinstated it, and starting scanning again. Canceling scans only delays them they restart on their own. Deleting just loops PMS with a database error.
This is a very cool feature, and I’m excited to see it progress. In the meantime:
Timeline photos won’t load. It did at first, but I think my library is too large now.
Options to upload from phone and have a shared upload library would be excellent. As would the ability to add metadata to photos.
Pixel 7 Pro. Library is around 130k photos.
Thank you!
I’m delighted you are building a separate photos app, and I look forward to seeing available as a smart TV app.
For me, the focus should be on family (or community) sharing, and I would love to see not just shared comments as others have asked for, but I’d like to show, and filter, on user favourites and ratings, rather than having these isolated in each user account. This would allow for a voting and critiquing system
I believe this would position Plex Photos as the ‘family collective photos app’.
I have previously raised an issue concerning the ‘update-ability’ of photos versus other types of media. Photos can and are likely to be edited. Consequently, I want to load a new version of a particular photo (e.g. edited externally to increase the brightness), and keep all the main metadata (apart from date updated) the same. Importantly I want to show a new thumbnail for the new file version. So, change one photo, and have the thumbnail represent to the new version loaded.
Overall the app is great. It’s faster and more power efficient than the Synology app. I can access the images locally and remotely. I’m using a catalog of about 100k photos works great, except for Timeline view, it doesn’t load.
I would love to see support for Olympus Raw file format for cameras like the OM5. I am also interested in being able to see which lens was on the camera in the info tab (for all cameras/raw files). I would love to be able to search through the library. Based on exif/tags/location. I would also like to see more smart cataloging on the recommended page. Faces/People/Locations/Objects/Etc. Perhaps a way to create virtual folders apart from the favorited photos? We want see some of the intelligent stuff the native photos app on iPhone can do.
I do care for AVIF, and I say leave out HEIC, it’s proprietary and the future is AVIF.
First off, thanks for the update and the transparency.
Can you explain in any more detail why mobile uploads are not on the roadmap? I have multiple non-technical people in my household that would like the ability to upload photos to my Plex server. As silly as it may sound to technical folks the conceptual overhead of using a separate app to upload photos is just too much for them to handle. Being able to upload directly from the Plex Photos app would make this a non-issue. Is this a technical hurdle or just a matter of prioritization?
Without the ability perform mobile uploads it’s unlikely I will use Plex as my family’s photo storage in any capacity. I hope it ends up on the roadmap.
I’d love PMS to keep in sync with my Google Photos. That way…
- I have a local backup of my Google Photos.
- Google photos can look after all the difficult syncing with my phone stuff.
- A Plex client on my Android TV can display full res photos.
This fills 2 gaping holes - I have a local backup and I can get my photos on my TV at max resolution.
If there is no intent to add a mobile upload capability, and you aren’t supporting modern mobile image formats (ie HEIC, AVIF, etc), what is the intended use case from Plex’s point of view?
Is it only to view archival photos? If so, are there plans to add a slideshow or “digital frame” capability so that we can use an old tablet or phone as a digital frame? If that’s the case, are you able to add support for lower iOS or android versions so we can pull those old iPads or Android tablets out of a drawer and put them to use?
Thanks.
I would love to see the option to create tags for my photos which are then searchable. If Plex could make that automatically using my GPU that would be even better as song as they still give me the option to add tags with my own scripts.
I’m new to the world of Plex, excitedly waiting on my miniPC to arrive tomorrow then set everything up. This photos app sounds fantastic. I don’t know if the app currently does this but with some of us with large file size photo collections from our DSLR and modern phones capturing high pixel photos, it would be excellent if you could include a zoom in/out capability. With my old Playstation 3 I was able to quickly move from photo to photo and quickly and smoothly zoom in to reveal more detail. I realise this might be covered on mobile phones usual ‘pinch in/out’ functionality, but I’m also talking about viewing photos on things without this e.g. TV’s, where a zoom in/out would definitely be welcome.
I am using qnap file pro to setup auto upload of the photo reel on my iPhone 14 and works great, I plan on stop using apple photos back up
I hope you will be able to use the photos stored on the server to upload to Facebook etc… also need to have a delete feature as you don’t always want screenshots and other pictures on your mail library. Need to be able to search by location via map and show geo location for pics via map. Good so far ![]()
Can i use the app on a tv? Or can i transfer the photos using the chromecast from my mobile?
