I’m about to cry… it’s since automatic tagging was removed that I was awaiting this day while jumping from immich to photoprism to nextcloud and banging my head everywhere!
THANK YOU FOR PLEX PHOTOS!!!
my very first feedback would be adding the geo information when clicking on info of a picture.
then adding a search by location would be great (a map overlaying where picture were taken). But first of all being able to look at the map where a single photos was taken (like in the webapp) is definitively my first ask.
The photo app isn’t able load the timeline view. Even though it loads both the recommended and library view.
I’m not sure if this is relevant to the timeline issue I’m experiencing in the photo app, when I view the photo library in the plex app half the folder thumbnails won’t load, no matter how many time a refresh the library.
Is there a fix in the works? / workaround for now to continue testing?
Having read the comments above, the biggest hope I would have for the future direction of development, is the idea of the ‘managed users’ being considered 1st class citizens.
their own photo storage
the ability to share / hide photos with other home users
With both Plex and Plex amp, I’ve noticed that home users seems to be little more than a preferences container. Eg. Cant share playlists between home users in PlexAmp, the ‘delete after watching episode’ seems to only work on the primary user etc etc. the whole home/family user doesn’t feel very integrated .
So, as you’re juat getting started on this journey,
please design this in a way that works for families and households, and not around a primary user.
I have installed the Photo app and made a library on my Pi server’s hard drive. Filled is up with photo’s. Everything worked fine… but… i miss a button that lets me download a photo to my phone. This was the reason i got excited about this app in de first place. This would allow me to quickly post to social media my edited camera files, exported to the nas from my dedicated photo software package.
Alass, it’s only browsing with changing colors in the background. I think this is quite useless extra feature. On plexamp its nice, but when browsing photo’s its only slows down and distracts. Please make this an option.
There is no other functionality so i don’t really see a big benefit from this app.
Hoping to see downloading come available(at least for plex pass)
My wife and I use the Photo slideshow on Plex a lot, especially when entertaining and always playing music when we’ve got photos showing on the display. Separating it out on a different app does nothing to improve the photo slideshow experience for us. Why do I need to run another app? Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems you’re integrating streaming services into Plex and moving our media out. I really don’t get you guys at all anymore. Managing media on our servers isn’t the priority?
Background option other than Blur. A black background would be nice
A “dissolve” transition during play back
The ability to “cast” from IOS or a TVIOS specific app.
I am still wondering why there is a separate Photos app, yet the regular Plex IOS and TV app do exactly the same thing without the introduction of yet another app. What am I missing? There are issues with the regular Plex app, like Shuffle and Play Slide show are non functional. Finding “Folders” is easier in the Photos app though.
I would like to suggest adding a feature to set a toggle for auto-playing videos. This would allow users to enable auto-play for videos, so when browsing media and scrolling through photos or videos, the video would automatically play without requiring the user to click the play button.
Additionally, I found that portrait videos are being forcibly rotated to landscape mode during playback. Please fix this bug. Alternatively, like the Plex app, you could add a toggle to force landscape playback. When disabled, the video would play according to its original orientation.
I have just setup my Android photos to auto upload and copy to the plex server .
I have changed it to sync with Onedrive as it keep the full res version (NB. this is a sync not a backup so if you delete from the gallery or from OneDrive you will lose your photos, so just be careful).
I then have a backup.bat file that copies the files onto my HDD, this happens every 15 mins (It only copies the new files)…
Set SourceDir=“C:\Users\Administrator\OneDrive\Pictures\Samsung Gallery\DCIM\Camera”
Set TargetDir=“C:\shared\pictures\Camera”
xcopy %SourceDir% %TargetDir% /i /d /y /e /h
I also have a PowerShell script to remove the files from the OneDrive that are over 7 days old (this also removes them from the phone), this also gets run every 15 mins
So I checked and there hasn’t been any update/fixes to the new Plex Photos app yet? I briefly tried it shortly after release and it keeps saying “Failed to load image” right away after showing the image for about half a second.
I thought there would at least be some basic bug fixes by now.
That works for whoever has the Onedrive app installed on their phone. My autistic son is 9 years old and I really don’t want him having unfettered access to my Onedrive because I do have critical documents there. Plex Photo Sync worked to allow him to upload and with no access to delete.
I have 2 libraries, one with 45K photos and the other with 35K photos, these are from a range of cameras and devices over a very long time period. The Plex Media Server is the current beta running on Debian 12 with everything up to date.
Things I’ve noticed:
The opening tab is “Recommended” on a library, but this takes a little while to load… this could be cached, or background updated daily and it would be sufficient.
The “Timeline” view really hurts with libraries of the size that I have… the screensaver will turn on long before the timeline has loaded… estimating a minute or two to load the timeline. Once it does load then it’s really smooth and nice, but missing a way to get to a rough date, i.e. “July 2017” without a lot of scrolling (which puts work on the server and app, and this could be avoided by a “jump to date” capability). This is also missing some caching to give the illusion of performance, this is very slow on my very fast WiFi and same network as the Plex… so on mobile this is painful… it should feel like Google Photos does on a phone, i.e. near instant. I appreciate that this means caching thumbnails of n recent pics in the timeline, and also possibly caching enough information for you to quickly achieve the layout, i.e. dates and pics per date.
The “Library” is nice, I sort my folders “Year” > “Month” in ISO format, i.e. “/2017/07”… so I do have a jump to date via that. I would like to be able to filter things like camera model, and instead of it jumping to the list of photos for it to just leave the directory structure visible but now filtered to only the directories that have matching items in the sub-directories.
My workflow is “syncthing from Android to NAS, process into the Plex directories every few weeks”… so eventually my Plex is complete, but there’s always a latency of recent things on my phone which is the working set… I absolutely do NOT want these auto-uploaded into Plex, I use my phone to take pics of menus to zoom in, hotel room door numbers to remember where I am (I travel a lot), and about half of my pics are ephemeral and never reach Plex… but I would like a combined view, where “Device” is a category on the “Recommended” view, so that a single app is a window to all of my photos, the ones on the device and the ones on the Plex server.
Hope this helps, am happy to test specific things for the Plex team given that my libraries are large and it may help.
Final note, my libraries do not contain raw photos, I have a mirror file structure for the .dng files and equivalent… but… my photos in the last few years are typically in the 40MB-60MB per picture range, which is to say, if you need a super large file size tester than I can help, also I’m in software engineering so have no problem providing bug reports should I encounter issues. My device is a Pixel 9 Pro.
A nice feature would be an automatic image upload/synchronization from the phone to the Plex server via the Photos app, serving as a backup solution. It was supported with the plex app, but the feature was removed. Please add it to the new Photos app.
It would be also nice, to have videos synchronized from the phone gallery also.
It would be great if I had the ability to download an image to my phone or delete an image. Actually, deleting would be very beneficial as my photo library has been neglected and is 4 people’s cell phone dumps monthly for now 10+ years.
Since Picaso bit the dust I haven’t had an easy tool to view and edit/delete files from and I’m sure I have 1000s of memes I don’t need in my family photo library haha.
Also, what is the hard limit of timeline? Mine has never loaded. I have about 135k photos. My band photography library loads (slowly) with about 23k photos.
So is Plex basically giving up on Plex Photos already or what’s the deal? They introduced the beta 4 months ago and it already seems to be abandoned? Normally I would’ve expected a lot more releases by now…
