Photos Beta Feedback

Please see my reply here:

We’re currently all hands on deck with the main Plex app going through the preview period. Once that starts to settle down, Photos will see some fixes and improvements.

Forgive me, but I do not see the incentive as to why this was created in the first place.

From what I can tell, the app has the same functionality as the current plex app. Looking at every roadmap available for this app gives nothing outside of bug fixes and phasing out photos from the main plex app.

What are the intentions for creating this app and breaking away from the main plex app? What are the roadmap features that we can come to expect and be excited about? What are the incentives to make me use this when, currently, better solutions are available?

I really want to come back to the Plex ecosystem, and photo support would be big. However to me it seems this app was created to generate buzz, without any real plan or mention as to WHY this is better than the competition. Right now this is a basic photo browser with a timeline view, and nothing said really indicates that its going to be anything more than that.

Can you elaborate as to what’s coming down the pipe to make people interested in switching over to using this?

They are removing this functionality from the Plex app that’s why…

On my iPad the Filter option is on the Library tab, not the Timeline tab. Additionally, the only date related field is “Year”.

Would definitely like to have the “auto-upload from device” feature that the old plex photos used to have and was removed. Many users have requested this and my household would appreciate it. Make it a top priority for a feature to add. We have to resort to paying for another app, PhotoSync, just to get auto upload from mobile devices.

Also getting the “Nothing to see” cycling with whatever the view is. Version 0.3 iPhone app

Understand the focus is currently on the preview app. Is there a roadmap of sorts that you can share so we can set expectations accordingly. For an initial roll out app is great but definitely needs a quick turn around for the performance issues in timeline and some of the sorting functionality. Roadmap with features (even without a solid deadline) would go long way.

I’m using Plex Photos v0.3.0 on iOS, and I’m noticing (commonly know issues):
-Not able to properly process Live Photos (same as in web interface)
-Not able to display .heic files (same as in web interface)
-Videos crashing when switching to landscape mode.
-Doing strange things with pic metadata (mainly dates), same as in web interface.
-Timeline not loading at all for a 200k pics and vids library, I’m only able to load folder by folder.

Timeline doesn’t load for me at all. I know I have a lot of photos but this should definitely work right?
It works in the plex app.

Here to report my Plex Photos app simply does not load upon a Android 15 one Plus 13. I see i can download logs but not sure what to do next. I just get a spinning yellow circle.

It doesn’t seem like they are going to be adding this feature.

Never thought about it, but I can see them monetizing each separate app now…you want photos, you need to buy the photos app (or some functionality is paywalled)…same with music (PlexAmp), and Movies/TV (main Plex app).

@aubrey.wodonga do you know if there will be soon a new version coming out to get it more in a stable situation plus is it also available soon on Apple TV please?

Are there any updates on these issues? Also, when will the Photos app be developed again? Since the Photos app was removed from the main app with today’s update, I can’t view my photos at all because the timeline doesn’t load.

It does look like the Plex team is going to be putting out some fires with this release.

This needs automatic photo uploads ASAP. Since photo uploads ended I have moved around from NextCloud, Photoprism, Immich, and Piwigo and they all either don’t have Android Apps that have photo upload, Don’t have nested albums, or have bugs displaying some of my photos. I don’t understand why self hosted photo management is so bloody difficult. They all have dumb obvious missing features. Immich for example has had a feature request for nested albums for 3 years and it is a multi thread novel length discussion for some. Why is this so difficult to figure out?

Ugh, what a terrible rollout. This app is so barebones, I mean how can you have a photo app incapable of playing slideshows? I hate having this removed from the main app, as I also hate having the music removed. Just what your users were begging for, more disparate apps to compensate for removing features we preferred in the main app. Shame on your company for this ham-fisted premature release.

Couldn’t agree more. I do not want half a dozen apps to manage & use my media and neither do my family members.

The best thing about Plex up until now has been the ‘see everything in one place’ app experience.

We need more effort put into improving the music and photo experiences in the current app - not crappy useless substitute apps.

was the version from 09/2024 ever updated? what is going on?
they should charge like 50€ for a photos lifetime license and make an amazing app with top of the line ai features etc. etc.
like they did with plexamp

I still can’t view in landscape or download any photos to my phone. Pretty basic stuff that’s been missing for me from the start on my Pixel 7.
