Physical NFC cards to trigger Plex playback via Home Assistant

Wanted to share a small project I’ve been tinkering with that ties Plex into my Home Assistant setup.

As my media + smart home system grew, I realized everything was controlled through apps — which works, but feels a bit disconnected.

I missed having something physical to interact with, especially for music and movie playback.

So I started using NFC cards that trigger Plex playback via Home Assistant automations — playlists, movies, even full media scenes.

Tap a card → media starts.

Started with simple NFC tags but ended up making acrylic cards with printed designs so they feel more like physical media.

Curious if anyone else here is doing something similar with Plex + Home Assistant

Damn, those are great. You will have to write something up about it esp making the physical media - I would love to do something similar like you miss the physical media - already moving back to analogue for other IT related things.
