I was thinking that the “Play Version” button is really too hidden, most of my friends which are not very tech savvy they don’t even know its existence and quite often they play the wrong version because Plex would suggest them to play the 4K version but their connection is not powerful enough or for whatever reason they can’t handle that version.
So, I was thinking that to “help” these people and have a better UI it would be better to introduce that button in the Play button itself, as a dropdown on the right.
So basically I would add a dropdown arrow on the right of this button to be able to select another version. If the user click on the Play part (which would still be around 80% of the entire button) will automatically play the content, but if the user clicks on the dropdown arrow, it would open an options panel for the user to select the version.
And of course we can dynamically render this dropdown arrow only in case there are 2+ versions available of the same content.
There’s another suggestion, discussing the UI for selecting a version. That suggestion asks for an option to bring up the version selection popup when playing an item.
That would work too, yep! I proposed the dropdown because it would keep the current functionality of just hit play and start the video without adding a step more, but I like both the solutions to be honest, I don’t mind make 2 steps to play a video if that has more than 1 version.
Thanks for pointing me to that thread!
