Server Version#: 1.13.5.5332
Player Version#: iPhone, Web, AppleTV (Plex), AppleTV (Fuse)
I use an 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac with 6GB of RAM and two external drives as my Plex server. Until now I have been pre-transcoding my 4K files from MKV to MP4 under the impression that was all that my Apple player devices could handle. However when I used my 2018 MacBook Pro as a server, using those same external drives, I was able to play the 60GB MKV files without problem. The iMac was trying to transcode them whilst the MacBook was using directplay for the video and transcoding the audio only I think. The iMac is wired to the network, the MacBook is on wifi.
Since it is the same set of players in each case I don’t believe the issue is not with them.
Can any one tell me why my older less capable machine is trying to transcode a file that would probably take it several weeks to complete, whilst the much more powerful machine that might be able to transcode it in real time doesn’t even try, it just sends the video dat to the players and lets them sort it out.
