Server Version#: 1.40.0.7775
Player Version#: Newest Beta + Current App Store Version
I have two apps installed on my Apple TV 4K (Newest Version, connected via gigabit ethernet) that can play content from my Plex Server. The official Plex app and Catch (which I am testing via TestFlight).
Playback via Catch is flawless. Playback for all content is almost instant and 4K Remux files play great, though the video is transcoded to a compatible 4k format.
The official Plex app is another story. This has been an on-going issue for months.
- 1080p TV generally works, but longer episodes seem to replay the last 5 mins after the episode is over. Playback timeline just stays at the end while the last 5 mins replays.
- 1080p movie content works but often takes 10-25 seconds to start playback (this happens with files with similar bitrate to the TV shows that i have no issue with, so it doesn’t seem like a network issue).
- 4K Content, never works. I get the loading spinner forever. It doesn’t matter what combination of “old video player”, “old audio engine” allow/don’t allow direct play", I use. Not allowing direct play often gets the video file to load, but playback doesn’t start.
Playback on desktop, iPhone, and Catch for Apple TV just works. The official Apple TV app has just become incredibly unreliable over the last 6 months or so. Same issue with current Beta and App Store version of the app.
