Hello all, I am reposting this as it is still relevant and spot on with the issue I am currently (still) having with my Plex Player on my Apple TV 4K.

I have been using Plex for years and to date have no issues with playback of 1080p videos.
The problem seems to have all started with 4K movies. Most x265 MKV’s will not play natively (it will attempt to play it and then finally says there is a problem with the media and to try again). The few movies that DO play it is VERY jerky… almost like it keeps buffering or stuttering. I have tried using the Old Player and the New Experimental player and I get the same results. Next my solution was to transcode so I turned off Direct-Play to force transcode of the movies. When I try and play the movies with transcode it fails to play and says there was a problem with the transcoding.
I have been at a loss trying to figure this out for awhile now. At first I thought it was Server side issues… but everything there is fine. I have read all over the internet of people having similar issues and they point to the fact there is a major problem with the AppleTV and iOS plex player.
I did what many others did was purchase Infuse5 (an alternative media player that connects to the Plex Server). It then pulls my collection and I can play my movies. Those EXACT SAME movies that Plex was unable to playback or had difficulty with now play PERFECTLY. Every single movie is flawless.
I do not understand how such a major issues like this still exists (This problem has been around for 6+ Months).
From my understanding, this might be an issue because plex has until recently been using the AppleTV and iOS player that lacks support. With the new Plex Player release, I would have expected this issue to have gone away now… but it still exists.
Are the Plex Developers aware of this issue? Are they working on it?
I find it very upsetting that I need to pay for my Plex and then I had to go and purchase a separate media player subscription just to play my 4K movies. I do not mind if this is something being actively worked on and a fix is expected soon (so then Infuse 5 is just a band-aid solution until Plex is fixed).
This appears to be an issue with 4K and MKV’s and HEVC.
Have others had this issue?
As I said I can play back 1080p content no issue and always have.
