Playback Jittery on Xbox

I’m having some issues with playback when I play on my Xbox. The audio is perfect, picture quality is clear, but motion is jittery as if there are dropped frames. When I opened the stats on the Xbox to see what’s happening it shows that it’s direct play, no buffering and there are no dropped frames.

I tried playing the very same video on my phone and it played perfectly. I had started it on my laptop and it played perfectly too. Restarted the server and it still skips around.

The dashboard shows that there is no transcoding happening. I turned off the subtitles in case that was affecting my playback but there was no difference.

The dashboard doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary. Is there anything I should look at in the Xbox player settings?

The screenshot shows that the phone is playing a 720p H.264 version while the Xbox is playing a 1080p H.265 version but even if I select the 720p it isn’t smooth. It has a marked improvement for the first minute or so then it starts to look like there are dropped frames although it’s better than the HEVC version.

So, after a few days of all HEVC videos being jittery, playback is now smooth again and I changed nothing on the server.

I’m getting this too for the last week or two, that I’ve noticed. It only happens with very specific files. These files played fine earlier this year, which leads me to believe some regression has been introduced in the client package. The way I’ve been working around it is to play subtitles.

Edit: these videos play fine on my Android Device, it’s only the Xbox client on the XBox Series X that has regressed.
