Playing back content locally, but the stream is limited to remote stream bitrate

Server Version#:1.15.0.659
Player Version#:3.77.4
Plex Web Version#:3.87.2

Hey All,

I have been having some issue, with playing content locally on plex without bandwidth restrictions on my local network, I have successfully done this by turning off limit remote stream bitrate, but I have a few remote users so I want to be able to limit there playback setting.

So when I’m at home and play something on my phone or Playstation it limits the local stream to remote stream setting? Does anyone know why this would be?

Also, my second question is I’ve been looking at these (https://support.plex.tv/articles/227715247-server-settings-bandwidth-and-transcoding-limits/ https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/) for reference on my problem for remote stream and local stream to try and work what is going on, but when I was reading through (https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/) it says:

“Very few people will need to set or change this preference. It simply lets you specify which IP addresses or networks will be considered to be “local” to you. The previous bandwidth settings do not apply to “local” playback and only take effect for remote playback. By default, only the network subnet on which the server is located is considered to be “local” (which is appropriate for the vast majority of users). This setting can be found in Settings > Server > Network.” (https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/)

Is this because I have my server connected to a wireless extender switch which would be on a different subnet, if so what IP and subnet do I need to add to the LAN networks to make this work when I’m connected to my main router?

I know this long winded question but your help in resolving this would greatly appreciated.

Cheers

It is certainly possible.

Only you can determine that.
Inspect the network adapter properties of a machine that is connected to the extender. Note down it’s IP address.
Compare it with the IP of the server.

Ok, thankyou for the reply I have check that. But if that is the case how do I put the IP and the subnet in lan networks setting area? Would be possible to give me an example of what it should look like?

What are the IP’s of the server and the client?

Server IP: 10.0.0.128
Client 1 IP: 10.0.0.11
Client 2 IP: 10.0.0.8
Client 3 IP: 10.0.0.163

Ok, this is certainly within the same subnet. So the extender doesn’t do additional NAT.
That’s good.

If all your IP addresses only differ from each other by the last octet (meaning the numbers after the last period), you can use this:
10.0.0.0/24
(Make sure there are no spaces in there.)

Ok, I’ll try that when I get home and let you how it goes.

Ah, broke it again lol.

I tried playing direct playback on the server itself. And it doesn’t what to play the original quality for some reason now, it works on my iPhone (picture 1) but it doesn’t want to playback on the server it self. I have web client quality in the server setting set to maximum on internet streaming and home. Do know why it is doing this? I also added the netmask for all subnet just incase that worked (picture 3). Also when I remove remote streaming limits it says playback is original but then I look in the dashboard of now playing and it says transcode to 1080p to 720p

Just using 10.0.0.0/8 would have been enough.

At this stage you will need to inspect log files, to see why Plex is acting like this.
Enable debug logging
Restart Plex server
Play the file
Fetch the Plex Media Server.log
And inspect it. Search for lines containing MDE:

Hey there,

I’ve attached the server log, I think I’ve found all the MDE places and a few interesting things. But I still don’t understand why. I’ve I think I got all MDE sections and I’ve attached those sections in as a notepad.MDE.txt (14.9 KB)

Plex Media Server.log (434.6 KB)

I’m also having this exact problem. I feel like it’s come up fairly recently? Probably within the last few updates.

  • Try to use the web app from app.plex.tv instead
  • Disable IPv6 support in Plex (Settings - Server - Network - ‘Show Advanced’, afterwards restart Plex server!)

Which settings are made under
Settings - Web Client - Quality
?

I went through app.plex.tv and I disabled IPv6 and it worked sorted off it direct plays for 2 seconds then direct streams but, this might be an issue, but with the audio side of it does it automatically convert based on the input can I make not transcode as well?

!

There is no web browser out there which can decode DTS audio. If Plex server didn’t transcode this, you wouldn’t hear anything.

Download and install Plex media player from below if you want to avoid transcoding of the audio track as well.
