Playing Plex music Denon AVR and speakers

I just set up a Denon 660 AVR and speakers to my Roku TV (that has the Plex app). I know I can play music on my tv using Plex (from my plex media server on my computer). But is there a way for me to play the music without the tv on?

There seems to be a lot of options and I’m not sure what to try first. The Denon AVR has HEOS if that is an option for connection to my plex server. I couldn’t figure out how. I know that bluetooth from my phone to my AVR is an option but I have trouble with my phone staying connected through the bluetooth. Haven’t been able to fix the problem.

I would like to use my music on my Plex app from my phone and hear through my AVR speakers and not have the tv on either.

I would appreciate a direction as to what setup I should look into, if indeed there are any other options? Or how to use Heos which I saw the option to connect to a server but it I couldn’t see anything to do at that point and couldn’t find directions online.

Thank you!

The 660 has Airplay so you should be able to cast to it from the Plex iOS/android app (Airplay piggybacks on wifi so bluetooth not needed).

Ensure DLNA is on in the Plex server as it may be simpler to use DLNA as opposed to Airplay.

I could be wrong with your setup but it works for me and our Denon (X1500H).

Ok. I know I am from the dark ages but I don’t know what Airplay is. I will research.

Also, I’m am discovering that I have to have Plex Pass to download to my music to my phone for offline use, or it looking that way. If that is the case then I will probably look for another method to do this. I’m not sure what my simple, free options might be that will keep my music in sync with my desktop. Have been using Youtube music but dislike all of the extra content and advertising that it makes me look at. But I may just have to stick with that.

TY

DLNA may be a simpler option for you if the 660 shows up as a DLNA device.

Easy to check.

Just enable DLNA in Plex Media Sever settings and then hit the cast button in the phone app and see if the Denon is listed as a player.

DLNA provides superior audio than Airplay but both use wifi to connect.

DLNA | Plex Support

So, I enabled DLNA on the Plex Media Server. The Denon manual says it supports DLNA. When I try to cast from Plex app on android it only shows Plex on my tv as an option to connect to.

Not sure if I need to do something in the Denon. I am connected to wifi, I double checked. Internet radio works. I’m not sure what “input” setting I need to be on either for sound to come out but since the phone Plex app isn’t even discovering the Denon I wasn’t concerned about that yet. LOL

Still looking for the next step.

Sorry, can’t help with android, I only use iOS devices.

Hopefully Plex or other users can point you in the right direction.

Also, I discovered I can use the Denon App on the TV to access my Plex music on my computer but that is far from ideal. Very clunky interface. And still the tv has to be on. Better to use Plex on the tv in that case.

You cannot cast via DLNA. you need to use menus on the receiver it self or that Denon App. It would need Chromecast built in to show up as a castable device on Android afaik.

It looks like that Denon supports bluetooth so you should be able to connect to it with your Android phone like any bluetooth speaker.

He said not reliable

I can Airplay to my Denon from the Plex app (iOS)

Oh I missed that. Thanks

Then if the Denon does not have Chromecast built in is it not possible to connect to it directly with Android app

For some reason the bluetooth is iffy and intermittent.

I have a Chromecast dongle I can hookup if that makes things easier.

yeah it the app would connect to that. I’ve never used if with the screen turned off but if connected directly to receiver I would think even with TV turned off it would work. You will need to set up the chromecast initially with screen on of course.

HEOS speakers have the technology needed for streaming audio from an Android device built right in.

Never used HEOS myself.

If you have a spare Raspberry Pi (or similar) handy, I can heartily recommend headless Plexamp:

https://www.plex.tv/plexamp/#downloads

The Pi running headless Plexamp would be another input to your AVR. Then, using the Plexamp app on your phone (or its own web UI), you can play your music in all the interesting ways which Plexamp supports.

Never used HEOS either. Our app does not support it.
