Playlists - lack of sort options

Desperately needed. Using the 3 lines / hamburger to move items is useless. I have a music playlist with over 700 items currently and when you try to move something from the bottom up to even a couple hundred it takes FOREVER. The scrolling that occurs is painfully slow and there is no way to speed it up that I can see.

Plus 1. Here’s an example: i have a playlist with all our Pixar movies. When I add a new one, I have to drag it from the bottom to where I want it. Very painful for playlists that have dozens or hundreds of items. What I really want is for it to either show them sorted alphabetically OR by year.

You could add the movies to a ā€œPixarā€ collection and make a smart playlist (custom filter) sorted by title or year. When you add a new movie to the collection, it will be sorted correctly.

I keep hoping this will become a priority. Lack of basic functionality like sorting a playlist is frustrating. I do love Plex, but it would be so much better if this were addressed, especially for music.

Second that Request. In my Opinion easy to do for the Devs, has a great Value in Usage and is long overdue.

+1. I actually spent a decent amount of time looking through the UI to try and find this, I didn’t believe something so basic could have been left out.

+1. At the moment I’m using an old script-based tool (MovieFan’s Database Tool for Plex - thanks for this!) to send my playlist to MediaMonkey, managing it from there and then sending it back to Plex with the same tool. This is not a trivial task. I wish I would have written the steps down when I figured out the db tool, but it does indeed work, and I can stumble through the process, but it IS time consuming. I’ll try and write down the steps next time. I’d rather just manage my playlists through Plex though.

Out of interest @Ogontion what is the playlist you have, and what would you want to sort by ?

As a Plex Pass member i would also like to see better sorting options for playlists. I have one playlist that has all my dads CDs (currently 2 days 22 hours or 1488 tracks worth) and having to scroll to find if ive added a CD to the playlist is a bit of a task. I know there is global search option in the top left but even that does not show tracks in a playlist. PLEASE either add playlist sorting options or include playlist data in the global search. Im left to literally opening the playlist and then using my web browsers find feature (Ctrl + F) to find artist or track names in the list and that sometimes does not show the results im seeking. I hate telling my non Plex Pass friends about how great my plex pass is then saying ā€˜oh ya but if your trying to sort a playlist your out of luck’. Surely there can be a more streamed line approach.

In my opinion, sorting playlists should be a very basic feature. Therefore it should be high on the list in order to improve usability.

The lack of this feature is basically the reason I still use my old MP3 player to listen to music at work.
If the playlist feature would be improved, I would directly switch over to synchronized lists on my IPhone…

I did find an old feature request for this in the forum, but no one has voted for it.
Go here and click vote at the top.

Collections do that automatically. Just select all your Die Hard movies, click Edit, go to Tags, and put ā€œDie Hardā€ in the Collection field. Then switch your view to Collections. You can even set a poster image for collections… much better than a playlist.

Except Collections can only be done using Artists and Albums. So if you are like me and have a large 500 track playlist of random tracks, you can’t replicate that in Collections and are missing out on the ability to sort, set artwork, or even batch edit tracks in the playlist

how about sort by RANDOM

+1 I would love to see this feature for music playlists as well

+1 How has it been nearly 5 years and the basic function of sorting playlists is still not a thing? Plex, you know I’m down for you, but please add this. I’m not even talking about music, I’m talking about Film playlists. Sort by year would be great. Thank you!

Wow this is pretty insane…

I was looking for a way to sort my video playlist (ā€œArrowverseā€) after release date for easier viewing of cross over events.

Then I come across a 5 year old request… for this simple feature???
