I had to uninstall and reinstall to get things to show up. I don’t see myself switching to it as it’s like 1% done compared to the old app. I can’t even edit the main Home Screen and that’s pretty basic. People will have to switch to it to use the new playback features after April though which begs the question, why?
Its terrible, especially the live tv section
I’m just going to not update my main living room client for the time being and enjoy the current features that I have until they purposely break it. I already deal with the annoying UI updates they’ve made over the past two years on my other clients, so if something comes along that I decide I REALLY need, I’ll consider updating my main viewing experience. Not before.
Extremely stupid. Will switch to JellyFin fo sure .
was gonna buy plex pass for life, but without watching together there’s no point. Dodged a bullet
Absurd !
I mean Plex still has the better client support. JellyFin has a better backend/codec support so it will play better but it doesn’t have a polished client for different devices like Plex. Wish we could get the “just works” of JellyFin with the polished (old) apps from Plex.
That would likely be Emby you’re looking for then. Jellyfin is the open source fork of Emby and Emby had been Plex’s biggest direct competitor. Emby has polished native clients and server packages as well as active community (and a GitHub and developer specific community). They still do plugins as well so it’s popular with Anime folks because all the common anime DB sites have plugins. There’s also NFO support and lots of GUI templates for customizing media display (like putting overlays on posters to show media details). Before I picked up Plex I debated between Plex and Emby but went with Plex as the more robust platform and more active community option at the time.
Emby has a similar business model as “old Plex” - pay for a few locked features like hardware transcoding, offline access, backup\restore, etc. No streaming or social services. I like the idea of Jellyfin, and if it was just me using it I’d probably jump on it, but it’s not just me and I’m kinda burned out on being a project contributor and fiddling so I’m more inclined towards Emby.
Though leaving Plex has a lot of friction because I have built a lot of my media management and collections and hubs and such around my historical use of Plex. My family is used to using it too. Losing my watch history would also be annoying (I have some smart hubs based on it that are nice to have). Remote access is also easier to manage with Plex but less of a concern for me but might be something to consider.
Kodi is another big competitor but different style of media management with no server setup, just the client reading files and managing a DB. Infuse is similar and extremely popular with AppleTV\iOS folks. I assume most folks who have Apple TV and leave Plex switch to Infuse (many already use it as their front-end for Plex).
Edit: If you like having a project or customizing your setup and want to support open source solutions, Jellyfin is a great option and seems to be a solid community. Lots of under the hood stuff is available to tweak and set and if you’re already familiar with Docker then setup and management is pretty straightforward. It will work just fine for almost everyone, it’ll just take a bit more technical savvy than Plex or Emby or Kodi\Infuse.
Looks like it’s done. They are pulling a Sonos ![]()
I’ve disabled auto-update on my phone until they bring back IPv6 support
