Please Help - Need to run PlexConnect on QNAP NAS drive for Apple TV 2

Hi all,

I’m hoping this has already been covered and someone can just point me to the right thread. If not any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, I have a QNAP TS-853 NAS. I have Plex Media Server installed. I want to now use Plex on my Apple TV 2 from the NAS. Is there a way to get PlexConnect running directly on the QNAP that can run the Trailers hijack?

I have achieved getting this working using my Mac via OpenPlex but the downside is of course that the Mac has to be present and running for it to work. Ideally I want to get this working directly from the NAS as it’s always present and running. You get the idea.

Looking forward to any help/responses.

Regards,
Damien

I thought I would just add that the Apple TV 2 is not jailbroken and I would prefer to keep it un-jailbroken if possible because like to use the Red Bull TV app which I believe is not available when jailbroken. The software version of the Apple TV 2 is 6.2.1 (the latest for the Apple TV 2).

Does that help? There is a link to some QNAP NAS instructions…

RedBull doesn’t seem to work on a jailbroken aTV2 even spoofed to a higher iOS at this time.

Hi there, having the same problem damien reported.
My issue with the link baa mentioned is that it relies on using a MAC for a number of interemediate steps.

Anybody aware of a step-by-step procedure using Win for those terminal commands?

Thanks in advance.

First pre-release of a PlexConnect app is out - there’s an annoying bug that I’ll sort out soon, but if you can live with it then feel free to grab and test - https://github.com/Rycochet/PlexConnect-QNAP/releases/tag/v0.1-alpha

I have a TS-251+ and have tried the standard PlexConnect install from BAA, and get various errors, same with the Rycochet alpha version. The shorter one is the Rycochet error so lets start there…

When I try to install the qpkg from the App Center, I get an error:
PlexConnect 0.1 installation failed. The following QPKG must be installed and enabled: Optware | opkg, Optware | opkg.

When I try the BAA manual install at the CLI, I get :
[~/Library/PlexConnect/PlexConnect] # ./PlexConnect.py PlexConnect : *** PlexConnect : PlexConnect PlexConnect : Press ENTER to shut down. PlexConnect : *** Traceback (most recent call last): File "./PlexConnect.py", line 36, in <module> cmd_DNSServer = Queue() File "/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/Python/lib/python2.7/multiprocessing/__init__.py", line 217, in Queue from multiprocessing.queues import Queue File "/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/Python/lib/python2.7/multiprocessing/queues.py", line 48, in <module> from multiprocessing.synchronize import Lock, BoundedSemaphore, Semaphore, Condition File "/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/Python/lib/python2.7/multiprocessing/synchronize.py", line 59, in <module> " function, see issue 3770.") ImportError: This platform lacks a functioning sem_open implementation, therefore, the required synchronization primitives needed will not function, see issue 3770.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Plex and PlexConnect worked great on my $25 RPI, but just doesnt seem to on my $500 QNAP!

  1. What is “the Ricochet alpha version”?
  2. According to what I read from the log, this is a very old version… I don’t think it makes much sense trying to get that to run.

Hi BAA. Sorry – I made the post late in the evening and with much frustration!

The Ricochet alpha version is the link that Rycochet posted above. I also noticed that this was an old version but as I have scoured the net for several days and was unable to get anything to work, I was testing it out. Anyhow it appeared that this was loadable via the QNAP GUI (which also didnt work due to the Optware error).

With the above error message from your version, can you see what is going wrong? Through multiple previous configs on various RPIs, I have always found it to go with no issues.

I can read the message to you…

ImportError: This platform lacks a functioning sem_open implementation, therefore, the required synchronization primitives needed will not function, see issue 3770.

Otherwise I have no information about NAS, QNAP, or the OS/python installation running on that/your system.
