I’m a Plex fanatic/fanboy here…I think this is one of the greatest piece of software I have in my house and I’m so happy to be a lifetime Plex pass user.
Nothing has really bothered me, I’ve been patient when things were not necessarily great and again a fanboy in general BUT this thing that they keep doing by adding some stupid sponsored (or whatever) random content that I do not care about on my homepage is driving me nuts.
It feels like no matter what I do, they bring it back from time to time.
Despite all the love and time sunk on my server, this is going to turn me into a Plex hater.
Stop doing this Plex, seriously, PLEASE.
Thanks but It is disabled
That’s the reason why I said “they bring it back from time to time”.
I just had to remove it from one of my plex client (Shield) which was using the same account (my server account).
if you are talking about the ‘free live tv’ that was just recently released, that is a new and separate option.
so since it was new, that is why it popped up, and it is unlikely they will ‘disable by default’ so you will just have to disable any new services whenever they get released, just like everyone else who doesn’t want them.
btw, the live tv music videos, are actually pretty cool
TeknoJunky: thanks for taking the time to respond as well.
No, I had a row of Movies and TV shows on my homepage showing up on one of my clients.
Maybe they’re A/B testing something and I’m just in the wrong cohort…
I’m really wondering why this is pissing me off so much, it should annoy me but for some reasons it’s infuriate me.
It’s like if MS was sneaking up on my PC and reorganizing my folders on my HDDs and puttings ads in my start menu, that’s how intrusive it feels.
Okay I’ll check this option, that might be that ?
Thanks TeknoJunky.
Btw if someone from Plex is reading this thread, there are other (better) ways to introduce risky features to your user base but “sneaking up” on them and hoping that you will reduce attrition by making it difficult/obscure for them to disable those is efficient short term (if you’re just looking at boosting some numbers) but long term… this is bad business practice and the price to pay is very high (user re-acquisition is borderline impossible when you have so much friction to switch).
Oh and don’t take this the wrong way, I love what you’re doing…
If you have the provider disabled, then you shouldn’t see it even if Web resets. Are you sure you were using your account? These are also available if you don’t sign into the app. And if your not signed in there is not setting to know to disable it.
I’m 100% sure I was signed in with at least one account (just because the dashboard would have been be vastly different if t wasn’t the case).
I’m also 100% sure that it was a home user account but it may have been my wife or kids account instead of mine (the admin).
So maybe one explanation is that I was on a combination of device + family account that has not been yet “purged” but if that’s the case…it’s still a very tiresome UX not to mention that as a father now I have to wonder if somewhere on a chromebook, shield, tablet, smartphone etc…my kids may be exposed to stuffs that I don’t them to watch.
In the server UI, as an admin, there should be a very simple and easy way for me to exclude all non-authorized content, on all devices for all managed users.
You can still push me splash screens to let me know about new features but let me opt-in please.
That’s precisely what is possible on the page which @JuiceWSA has shown above.
It sounds to me that you only edited the home screens and sidebars but never disabled the media sources in general, in your account.
I have NEVER had a single instance of an incursion of Online Media into my Plexiverse - once they’ve been disabled.
I only have one Account.
If I had more - I would disable them on those as well - 'cause I know those settings are ‘Per Account’.
I’m the only one in my Home.
I have no ‘Managed Users’.
My remote ‘guests’ with their own accounts are on their own (I handled those at various ‘picnics’ around the NE USA a few months ago for those unable to grasp the technical skills to find their account, much less disable Online Media Sources in it).
I said it but you don’t want to believe me: It is/was disabled already, I did it months ago (thanks to this very forum).
Note: I have Plex installed in a docker (Unraid) and we use Plex multiple times a day on many endpoints.
Based on the different reactions, I do take back one important thing however.
My initial posts implied that Plex was doing this purposefully, I thought that was the most logical explanation so I led with that but after reading the different reactions it doesn’t seem believable anymore.
Looks like a bug, a cache issue idk…but not something intentional for sure.
if the past is any indications, it will show up again on my dashboard.
I will then make sure to breathe, pause, document everything and create a ticket or something.
In the meantime thanks everyone for taking the time to respond and if you see other people complaining about the same thing and claiming it was disabled do believe them please.
That might be a hard to reproduce bug.
That is the whole idea behind managed users. You can control what they have access to. If you’ve disabled these features for your managed user and still seeing that content, then there is a bug that we would be glad to look into.
Are you sure it was the “Movies and TV” section you saw and not the new “Live TV Streaming” section. New features commonly are enabled by default and you need to disable them if you don’t want.
100% I had to double check because I was so confused initially …the first Plex movie was “Capote” which I also happens to have in MY library and so for like the first few seconds I thought I was looking at my own stuffs and I was like what are these other weird movies next to “Capote”…and then it clicked.
Because this is not the first time that it happens to me since I’ve disabled the online sources
I looked up at my dashboard and there it was “Tv and Movies” so i had to manually remove it from my dashboard.
Few additional notes in case it helps:
I would say it happens every 6/8 weeks maybe but there was something different about it this time however.
Before it was showing up at the top of my dashboard so it’s unmissable but this time it was at the very bottom of my dashboard that initially made me believe that it was a new sneaky way to get it there and led me to my initial post/plea.
100% you have a bug, that’s was exactly my use case.
To be completely accurate and that may help you track the bug, the “TV/Movies” section on my server was 'Disabled for Managed users" and that was the ONLY section set up this way, everything else was just “Disabled”.
So it’s seems very suspicious that this section was precisely the one who showed up on my dashboard.
There is maybe some kind of media entitlement issues around managed users specifically.
I just posted about pretty much the same issue. The new Live TV seems to have broken the Home tab customization. It removed my Continue Watching and Recently Added. When I try to customize it the only options are Live TV content.
