Plex addon on Kodi direct plays 4K on Nvidia Shield TV, but Plex app transcodes. Why?

I have a few tv shows and movies in 4k. All of them stored on a PC in the same network as my Nvidia Shield TV. So, it’s just a matter of using home network for playing these files from Plex server on the PC onto the Nvidia Shield connected to my TV. If I use Plex addon on Kodi, the files direct play; however, using the Plex app on the Shield always transcodes them. This sometimes results in choppy video. Does anyone know why this is happening?

You’ll need to provide server logs in order to find out why it’s happening. Close the Plex Server application, wait one minute, start the Plex Server application, wait two minutes, then use your Shield TV Plex app to play a 4k movie. When it starts to transcode, wait one minute, then stop playback. Use a web browser to access the Plex Server settings and download the log files. Post them here for review.

The PMS is on Shield? Because this is the section for PMS on Shield not Shield client.

Hey!

I have the exact same problem. My Nvidia Shield Plex app makes a couple of my 4K movies on my PC choppy and unplayable, but it works fine when the Kodi app plays them.
Did you figure out what the problem was?

Have you tried again since last night? The new client switched to Exoplayer V2, and all my 4K content now seems to work without issue.

The new client switched to Exoplayer V2, and all my 4K content plays in 1080P - resolution does not match source.
Better than before, where it would just crash or black screen

Revert to Kodi until a fix is released
