I connected with Wimoweh support. For the Interwebs records, you do need to fill in the Settings for Plex, not just click the checkbox. So the steps (as of this post) are:
Click the Plex checkbox on the main UI window
Open Wimoweh’s Configuration/Settings
For Server field, put “localhost”
For Port field, put “32400” (I use the default port)
My Mac Mini seems to be working better now – tested for a couple movies.
@tfjunk - glad it’s all sorted now and thanks for updating the forum so other people can benefit from your explorations!
Just to clarify to anyone with similar questions the ‘server’ field allows you to specify a remote machine if you have a Plex server running on a separate machine. If, as in @tfjunk’s case, it’s running on the same machine as Wimoweh you can just use ‘localhost’.
@raftingquarrel Have you tested Wimoweh with music streaming? I’m using that right now and it seems to be dropping you still. When I VPN to my Mini and check Wimoweh, there is an Assertion but it is for the last movie that I streamed from a couple of days ago. I guess I wonder if Wimoweh’s algorithm/polling is meant for long-play media, not 3min songs.
I purchased Wimoweh and still can’t get it to work (Plex does not see library when Mac is asleep). Could the problem be my movies are stored on an external hard drive?
@lbalbo I’m quite sure what you mean about Plex not seeing the library when the Mac is asleep? Perhaps you can give a little more information about your setup?
@raftingquarrel or anyone else helping- i use Wimoweh so that i can connect to my iMac (10.11.4) over the internet with my iOS Plex App (iPhone/iPad) when its sleeping - i filed out localhost and the Port 32400 (Standard) - i checked Plex Box. If i do nothing else the iMac goes to sleep and i cannot connect over the internet - my iOS cant find the PMS then. If i check the BOX indefinatly then it works. My Question is if my Mac the goes to sleep or not if i check the idefinatly box or must i configure it somehow else so that may iPhone can connect to the PMS over Internet.
Sorry for my bad english.
best regards
@ekomax Wimoweh will keep your Mac awake when Plex is playing or otherwise doing work. It won’t wake a sleeping Mac up when it’s being accessed remotely. It’s difficult to say without knowing you’re setup but some kind of Wake on Lan access might be what you need.
Solved it by using the vpn connection of my qnap nas. if i connect via vpn to the mac, pms, it wakes up. Mac thinks its a lan connection on the network
hi, i try to use jiggler to prevent sleep mode of my plex media server on osx but with this app i can specify only the principal app that is always running.
i would like to know if with wimoweh i can mantain osx up only when a client using plex media server and not when plex media server running.
Yes, Wimoweh will keep the Mac alive when Plex media server is streaming content. If the server is not actually server content then the Mac will go back to sleep after a short period. I use Wimoweh for this very purpose and it works well.
I believe they are doing the same thing. Wimoweh has a Plex Media Server option which I believe watches the plex log files for activity and keeps the server alive while the logs files are in use i.e. there is plex activity. When there is nothing happening on the plex media server, the log files are quiet so the assertions are removed and the Mac is allowed to sleep. As I say, this works fine for me provided you have the check box for Plex Media Server at the bottom of the Wimoweh config page checked.
Not for me. When PMS wakes up from sleep Wimoweh cant keep him from sleeping again, even when streaming. . The script does. Mac sleeps untill i need him. Streams without problems and sleeps again after.
Wimoweh actually watches the Plex server status page to see if it’s streaming which is why you can run Wimoweh on a different host as well (a front end Mac for example) to stay awake when the PMS is awake too.
@Ekomax You’re absolutely right, Wimoweh has always been about keeping a Mac awake and preventing it from going to sleep in various conditions. Its never been designed to wake a sleeping Mac as that is baked in to the OS, you don’t need any extra tools to wake a sleeping mac remotely or otherwise.
