Plex on MacOS -- Stops when Mac sleeps

Not sure if this is the correct place to be asking this question, let me know if i should head somewhere else.

Basically i have had so many issues since upgrading my nas to DSM 7.

I am very much a beginner when it comes to all the stuff so i have just been googling everything to find guides to fix it. In the end i followed this guide above

Which fixed some issues but now, when im watching plex on my Samsung Frame TV i will get 2-3 sometimes 8 minutes of playback and then the episode will freeze and i get the black screen that says “Playback Error, An unexpected playback problem occurred”

Now i don’t know if it’s connected but i was putting my computer to sleep and then 3 minutes later this would happen, could it have to do with plex needing my computer to be on? Prior to DSM 7 this wasnt the case my Synology Nas DS420+ would just need to be on and running which it always is.

Anyway this is my only theory i am so lost with how to fix this issue.

Oh and my TV is in the same house as my NAS so it’s all on the same wifi if that helps.

@GemmaC

Would you please do the following?

  1. Settings - Server - General - SHOW ADVANCED
    – Make sure it shows DEBUG logging is checked
    – Make sure it shows VERBOSE logging is not checked
    – SAVE button if you make any changes

  2. Start playback of one of the problematic files

  3. Let it play until failure.

  4. Stop the playback

  5. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting (lower left pane)
    – Download Logs

  6. It will give you a ZIP file

  7. Please upload/attach here.

Thanks for your quick reply @ChuckPa .

Here are the logs

A Mac in the Synology forum? mmm’kay

  1. Your networking isn’t really setup too well. You have both LAN adapters on the same subnet. Best practices, which makes Plex a lot happier too, is one LAN adapter per subnet. Probably need to address that in a bit – continuing.

  1. I can see your Remote Access is listing itself as working.

  2. See the play request coming in from the LAN for the 2019 Tizen which disconnected before even starting.

Is this the behavior you’re seeing ?

  1. Next I see is the same Tizen playing 15 minutes of something and appearing to play normally.

  2. Then the whole network goes :boom: and resets all the connections.

How am I doing?

Also, I’d like to move this away from the Synology forum to a its own thread. Are you ok with that if I ping you when I create it ?

Hi haha yes I use a Mac I’m a graphic designer and it’s all my industry uses where i am from. Thats why i got a Synology because i had so many design files i needed to store safely.

So trying to follow along, this is all very foreign to me, a few things:

  1. I will need your help working out what you mean by LAN adapters etc sorry I’m very much at a 1/10 in terms of knowledge on this subject.

  2. Happy for you to move this question to wherever is suitable

  3. I think what you have noticed is correct from a basic user perspective it comes down to:

Plex Media Server on my Mac = working fine
Plex App on Samsung TV = working fine, only when my computer is on

Every-time i sleep my Mac while plex is playing on my TV 3-5 minutes after i sleep the Mac i get the playback error.

Plex App on Samsung TV wont connect again unless I turn on my computer and access Plex Media Server on my Mac.

Sorry for speeding along at Mach 5. LOL

  1. LAN adapter = Network cable plugged into the MAC. You have two, both are plugged in to your network. You only need one (unless you want to join them to act as one – aka. “BOND” them together. You get redundancy and, in some cases you get speed too

  2. Plex can’t play if the Mac is asleep. There’s nothing to “wake it up”. TV’s and other equipment is set to wake up but not most computers. Those type devices require special handling which the TV is not designed to do.

  3. This is why we put our Plex servers on computers (e.g. the Synology) because it’s designed to be turned on and kept on all the time. (DSM does not sleep when Plex is running because you might want to stream media at ANY time).

  4. Not sure if you noticed but it can take up to 5 minutes for the Synology to startup. This is why they are kept on and always available. Plus, it’s not good for the drives to power on / power off (wears them out much faster). Your Mac is probably all SSD and doesn’t care + is “instant on”.

@GemmaC

I have moved us here into the MacOS forum.

Okay now i’m getting even more confused haha.

I only have 1 ethernet cable plugged into my Mac. Everything else is USB devices and a USB-C drive.

Before DSM 7 plex would play even without my computer asleep, this i my issue, i have a Synology NAS so why isn’t plex playing from that, it is running 24/7 i don’t ever turn it off so why is my TV now somehow linked/connected to whatever my computer is doing.

I don’t understand how to fix Plex so it goes back to playing content on my TV via my Synology and not my Mac? My Mac Computer isn’t my server my Synology Nas is?

@GemmaC

Now I’m confused! … with a glimmer of hope

The log files you gave me were from a Mac, not a Synology.
It sounds like this is the root of the problem

Knowing now that you used to use DSM 6 for your Plex. not your Mac. I will get you back to where you want to be.

  1. Go to the Syno: Package Center . Which version of Plex is installed ?

  2. Open FileStation,

  • Look in the “Plex” shared folder. See if you have “Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server”
  1. Also, while FileStation is open, Please look for "PlexMediaServer shared folder.
  • Look and see if you have “AppData/Plex Media Server” in there.

These answers will tell me what we need to do.

INFO: My confusion came from understanding “Plex on a Mac” (the log files) and that it does & should stop working when the Mac sleeps. It wasn’t clear to me then that it wasn’t the desired place to run Plex. :man_facepalming:

Hahaha all good hopefully we will get there in the end i’m probably not articulating myself very well as i’m a complete novice.

  1. Installed Version 1.25.2.5319-7000

  2. I don’t seem to have the “Plex” shared folder, therefore no “Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” which is weird as i did before i had to do a big uninstall and reinstall of plex based on your guide here

  3. I have AppData/Plex Media Server in there

Im going to attach a screenshot so you can see what i’m seeing.

This is easy

Give me a few minutes please .

I am in my weekly staff meeting.

I will ping again when done.

okay no worries thank you so much!

I’ve looked at your account.

Only your Mac is showing.

This tells me the Synology never registered with Plex.tv

I would like you to do the following:

  1. In your open Plex/web browser, upper right corner , sign out. (in your avatar)

  2. Now open an Incognito (Private Browsing) Safari window

  3. Open the Synology by its LAN IP (substitute here: http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web )

  4. You should see a “Got It” and a “Sign On” sequence.

  5. The server should then startup and be ready to run the Setup Wizard where you’ll define shared folders.

Please let me know when you get to that point.

Okay so i did that, i think we are getting close, but now i cant see any of my folders i want to set up.

It’s only giving me these but i need in my case THEVOID/03_MEDIA/02_TV SHOWS

MUCH closer.

Now for the final step

  1. Control Panel - Shared Folders

  2. For each of your Shared Folders which contain media
    – Highlight the shared folder name
    – EDIT
    – Permissions tab
    – Change “Local User” → “System Internal User” (it’s a dropdown)
    – Check the box for “PlexMediaServer” to signify which level of access you want to grant.
    – SAVE

  3. Now go back and define a section. You should now see the contents of the shared folders before you click ADD

Okay, yay i think this is going to work, i went back to the http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web step and my potentially last question is is it normal to have my server appear twice, will that cause issues?

Check your PM from me. (upper right corner green dot).

I sent you info on that.

Given you’re at that point, and you want the Synology to be the preferred (default) server, Shut down the Mac Plex server.

Now open the Synology page again.

You should see one server listed (the Synology).

You can deconflict the naming by changing the Friendly Name

okay cool got your DM, i will take a look, do i need a mac server? i feel like i have accidentally created it and it’s whats led to my multilayered confusion ahahah

I would shut it down for now,

Force-Refresh the browser (Control + F5 keys)

see if we can get only the Synology to respond.

(Plex doesn’t care about names. It keeps an ID number. This is why two with the same name appear)

Im still getting options for two and i cant tell which one is my Mac Server and which is my Nas Server.

I named one VOID 1 and VOID but i don’t know which to delete / how to delete it
