I deleted the Plex app from my Roku and reinstalled it. Before I was running 3.x and with the new install it put version 4 of the app on and this seems to have solved my problems. Plex now wakes my iMac and no other issues so far. Only used it a few times but I think it should be fine from here on out.
So anybody with that issue, maybe try updating to the latest versions. Usually my Roku updates the Plex app automatically, but maybe with it being a new major version it didn’t?
I recently moved my iMac into our bedroom where our ATV is plugged into a large TV. every time operated the ATV the screen would turn on on my iMac.
Turns out it was because my iMac was seeing my remote from the ATV so it was operating both at the same time. My iMac was on mute so I didn’t realise what was happening, but wondered why iTunes was always open. It was due to me pressing play on the remote opens iTunes.
Anyway this may help some, otherwise i have no issues with my screen or sleep.
To turn off the infra red receiver it’s in settings-privacy and security-advanced

For those with the issue of the Mac sleeping during streaming, I have found the following app which works great. It is free and you simply tell it to keep awake while there is a process with ‘Plex New’ in the name.
I did try Wimoweh but it will not save the settings for watched processes which is an issue if your Mac is restarted. Hope this helps.
Hey,
your Jiggler sulotion sounds perfect!
But I have a problem with your keyword choice for the process recognition.
Jiggler doesn’t seem to work when I enter “Plex New” [edited]. Maybe that’s because of the space between the two words, idk.
According to the readme mutliple keywords have to be separated by commas - but that’s only usefull when used for different processes (it’s OR, not AND, if I’m not mistaken).
In the activity view my processes are listed as followed:
Plex Media Server
Plex New Transcoder
Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.plugins.trakttv]
and so on
I can only reference the Plex Media Server process in Jiggler. All Plex processes aftwerwards seem to be ignored. So, when I enter “Plex Media” it works, when I enter “Plex New” or “Plex Plug”, it doesn’t.
Did you do anything specific to prevent that behaviour?
It works for me but it needs to be Plex New and not New Plex as you had in your post. If that was just a mistake when posting then I’m not sure why it is not working for you.
Having said that, I now use Wimoweh to control this. I initially had a problem with this forgetting keywords but the developer fixed this and it now works perfectly.
I use Wimoweh over Jiggler because it has a couple of extra features that I like and also runs in the menu bar and not as an application which I prefer.
It is worth picking up as an alternative since it is only something like 79p in the App Store.
Hey,
thank you for the quick reply. Of course, you are right, I switched the keywords in the first part of my last post…silly me.
May I ask, what your preferences are in WimoWeh?
I just tried it with the “Plex New Transcoder” process for the exeption. But since Plex seems to starts a new process for every transcoded media file, it didn’t work, yet.
Yes, Plex starts a new process each time so don’t select the process but instead add Plex New as a keyword under settings. I’m not at my Mac just just but can share a screenshot later if you haven’t got it working.
Ya, you are right again. I tried “Transcoder” as the wildcard, but just realized, that wimoweh seems to shorten longer process names and it only recognized “Transco” for the displayed “Plex New Transco”.
“Plex New” works just fine. The wimoweh verification on entering the keywords really helps with that
Thank you for your help!
Hi,
I wrote Wimoweh, the new version now gets information directly from the Plex server by parsing the status XML feed. This should do away with messing around with wildcards and allows the Mac to stay awake whilst Plex is playing media (transcoding or otherwise) and then allow sleep when it’s finished.
There’s a demo version on my website
Hey, great to hear. How long before that version is likely to be in the Mac App Store or should I just download the version from your site in the meantime?
Also, any particular settings for Plex or do you just select the Plex short cut check box at the bottom of the screen? I ask because that previously kept the mac awake at all times since it only seemed to monitor if Plex Media Server process was running which was always the case.
@donka
App Store normally takes about a week or so so the test version will work for now and might help us catch any problems. On the prefs screen you need to chose your Plex host, the port and whether you’re using SSL. Then you can tick the Plex short cut on the main screen as normal and Wimoweh will interrogate the Plex server every few seconds to see if it’s playing media and create an assertion.
Thanks, sounds good.
I’m assuming it still features the delayed removal of the assertion as that is a handy features when watching movies back to back.
Thanks again. I’ll hopefully get this new version installed this evening. Just didn’t want to jump into it in case it didn’t work as expected for the kids while I’m at work!
@raftingquarrel I bought (App Store) and have been running Wimoweh on my 2010 Mac Mini. I have Plex checkbox checked. So, just to be clear, Wimoweh is running locally on the machine with the Plex Server. Clients are remote.
I don’t think it is keeping my Mini awake. Is the simply clicking the checkbox enough? Do I need to enter anything in the Preferences for Plex server info? I tried 127.0.0.1 with the 32400 port but that didn’t seem to help.
You need to check the box and enter the IP address and port number. I’m not at my Mac just now to confirm exactly what should be entered but can confirm the current App store version of Wimoweh works great for this purpose.
@raftingquarrel@donka I was trying Plex again last night (ps4 client to Mac Mini) and still had the Mini sleep quickly. It wakes on network access (yay!) but then sleep after a minute or two. I start a movie and then it sleeps.
And Wimoweh is installed and now helping this, so I would love to know how you have it set up.
My Mac is in storage at the moment while my house is being rebuilt so I can’t check the set up for the next month or two. I don’t recall the exact settings required as I applied them a couple of months back and it does work fine but you can contact the developer via this page and I’m sure he will help out…
