Plex and Plexamp client sortin and context issues

When searching by Artist, you choose an artist, the client shows you the Albums the artist appears on and all is good. When you select an album it then goes to the album with the focus on only the chosen artist. Again, all good. If you select the 3 dots to the right of the song, there us a selection to “go to Album” it goes to the album listing tracks by that artist. There is not a way to show a multi-artist album. Even in Album View is it Album title with entries for each artist. example: 80s top hits shows 20 entries, one for each artist/track. How can play an album without creating a playlist or forgetting about tags and playinf from the folder the tracks are stored in? This seems like a bug or at least an oversight.

By pressing Play at the album’s preplay screen.
You can look at Album Artists, Albums, or Tracks. It is easy to get from one to the other.

This will probably not work at all, unless

  1. your folder structure and file names are exactly like Plex is expecting them to be
  2. all your albums are existent on Musicbrainz.org

No. Plex is not a file system browser.
It always works like this: At the Library Scan stage it tries to make sense of your media files, and connect them to meta data on Musicbrainz.org. Then it will insert these data into a database, from where you can browse and filter and sort them by various criteria.

Samplers/Compilations have a common “Album Artist” which is the same for all tracks of that album. (Artist != Album Artist)
For most of these albums, the Album Artist is called “Various Artists”. And that is the name you can click on in your library, when you are looking for compilation albums.

Plex is only putting Album Artists into its database.
Track Artists (i.e. those, which don’t have a whole album attributed to them in your collection) don’t get their own Artist record.
That is a restriction of how Plex is handling music.

Plexamp will at least show you tracks on compilations, when you look at an Album Artist’s preplay page. But of course, these only exist for Album Artists.
