Plex app “always on top” feature

I’ve got three monitors at my desk, and there’s a TV with plex access in just about every room of my house. But sometimes, it’s not enough. Maybe we’re in bed and my wife is watching a documentary, or I could be on the deck, or even soaking on the tub trying to get some work done.

I could probably try to balance my phone somewhere, or find a way to prop up a tablet against something, but it would be nice to be able to bring up the desktop app on my laptop, shrink the window and stick it in the corner of the screen, and have it stay there while I do other work. That way I could still throw up a show or movie that I wanted to watch and continue to work on my laptop. Make it a “picture in picture” type of feature.

This is possible now.

To help you further, could you please post the version number of the Plex app you are using and on which OS you’re using it on?

Version 1.6.5.1097-3bb9dc68

Windows 10

It seems like then that you have somehow put the Plex player in full screen mode. You merely need to put it back in windowed mode, resize it, and position it wherever you like.

Yes, but let’s say I want to watch a show while typing in Word.

I can resize the window all day long, but once I open up word it’s going to cover up the plex player.

What I’m suggesting is an option to keep the media player window on top even when another window grabs focus. An “Always on top” button while watching something would be great.

It would be very very nice to allow a video window that is always on top. I am running macOS 10.15.x.

Works exactly as described by darcilicious.
Switch the app to window-mode and make sure to have “Always on top” checked. This way the video window will always show on top of your other windows.

Personally I like the Plex for Mac/Windows client better for that purpose as PMP is designed to be used in full-screen mode (both from a look & feel and control/navigation point of view)

Was this added recently? I swear it wasn’t there when I posted this originally.

let’s put it this way… I cannot remember it not being there

Can someone please tell me where this controls is? In the MacOS version ( 1.19.4.2935 ), I have looked in every single available dialog and there is no existing entry for “always on top” that I can find.

This is a setting that I agree has always been available in the past, and now I can not find it anywhere…very debilitating.

Thanks

I cannot currently verify this myself. Should still be where it used to be in the Plex for Mac/Windows client:
Settings > Plex for Mac / Windows > General > Keep Plex on top of Windows

I found it…its missing from the web app using Safari , but present on the desktop app and I was just missing it. Thanks so much, this was driving me crazy!

(Here’s Plex Web, missing the option:)

Plex Web is a web browser and won’t get the option. If you want your browser to be on top you need to look for an extension for your browser if one exists.

I’ve also moved this out. of the feature suggestion categoryto give votes back for the app it was asking for Plex Media Player.

for any one looking for the setting the apps.

Plex Media Player
