Plex app for Panasonic Smart Viera

Someone catch me up. What was rejected and why? Is Panasonic Viera running Opera?

pleeeease panasonic do something! ;-) i have a p65vt60 with an hp chromebox behind atm, but would love to use it native.

After reading this (very frustrating) thread I realised the only way to elicit an intelligent response from Panasonic will be to publicly humiliate them.....bad press is bad business.

For them to appear as an 'also ran', or the Blackberry/Nokia of the smart TV world would have considerable financial consequence for them, and we all know that the bottom line is the true driving force for these large dinosaur type companies as was demonstrated when Panasonic chose to drop plasma development in favour of the much inferior yet more cost effective led technology.

Since the "smart" feature support from Panasonic is more or less non existent (i.e updating TV-firmware apps etc) i have since some time tried out the RaspberryPi with Rasplex. Both the original Pi but also version 2. Works fine (actually very fine) and is possible to CEC-control from my Panasonic remote. The only "manual" step is to switch receiver hdmi input to RasPlex. But other than that a fine solution and in my opinion not too expensive (cheap really).

Could be worth a try for you out there looking for a way to have Plex on your Panasonics without buying a stand-alone STB-like product.....

still waiting a solution. How could accept many apps from Youtube, dailymotion etc... and not Plex. Can't understand.

Will vertion 2 Pi play a lossless rip mkv dts master audio without issues?  I though Pi was not able to play high bit-rate files that well.

Pi 2 plays high bit rate films with DTS no problem, I have one at home (uses ethernet not wifi). The internet has a number of videos if you google showing what it can do, here is one I found. I have to say with RasPlex and the TV remote working through HDMI it removed my disappointment about the lack of Plex built in.

I think it doesnt support DTS HDMA, standard DTS yes of course, but that format is not hardware possible. Im quite unsure since i have no receiver capable of playing this format. But i have read about it in the RasPlex part of this forum....

Yeah DTS-HD MA will likely never be supported. That little box is amazing, but it will never be able to do everything that a full blown media center app can do on a full blown computer.

That sounds very promising. I am looking into this.

Your manual step is pressing the AV button on the Panasonic remote?

Are you aware of any resources or tutorials of how to set this up? Which steps did you take to set it up?

I looked at the RasPlex website and it mentions the sketchy CEC, and CEC is also sketchy with the WD TV Live, so i can't be sure that CEC will work on my TV.

The CEC just worked for me on my Panasonic TV and I have not heard of people with issues with the basic controls, the advanced controls might need some debugging/editing to enable. For me it was plugin, swap to HDMI 1 using AV button then it just worked :)

The manual step is that i need to get up and find/reach for my remote for my receiver :) And select the RasPlex input. Not using the HDMI input on the Panasonic since the TV lacks functionality (like almost all TVs) to route 5.1 sound HDMI->ARC-Receiver. Otherwise it is downmixed to 2.0.

otherwise its very straight forward; Buy a Pi2 (with mpeg2 license if alot of DVD ISOs is to be used, 10 bucks), download installation package. install on SD card from OS of choosing. Put SD card in Pi. Start it up and it will find your Plex server if located on same subnet.....

Agree. CEC works out of the box and since like yesterday rasplex 0.6.0 was released solving a long issue with FastForward/Rewind. That one had nothing to do with CEC or Panasonic though. Also i actually had one CEC issue; using a low amp USB socket to power the Pi some CEC-controls where not enabled giving me suspect behaviour...but now with a 2 Amp converter its online 24/7 without any hickups.....

What you think about, to make a crowdfound to get money together for a coder that make a app for panasonic tvs, that cant get rejected from Panasonic?!

I have brought this up before, I am willing to invest into this as well, I tried all the “alternatives” however they all have serious limitations.

I would like to be able to make use of my high end TV hardware and also keep the simple usability, after all this is the main idea behind Plex, it’s not only computer specialists that want to use this TV at my house, so the simpler, the better!

Can we have a vote of people who would pledge San investment to get this up and going?!

I would be willing to help contribute to this project. Also as long as it would work for my panasonic version. I have the Australian ST50A tv.

I would donate to get this topic up and going.
