I suffer from an issue on my Sony Android TV when watching content on the native Plex app sometimes the local dimming does not work at all. This only happenes with DV content and also only with content with certain aspect ratios.
Sadly this affects a lot of people for months now but somehow not a single Plex Dev ever answered to any thread so far…
Please get an eye on this and fix that. (Just for info, this has to do something with the Plex app, since playing the exact same files via the Jellyfin app does not recreate the Local Dimming issue)
@morganj can you please look into this?
Would you be able to share a file where you experience the issue? I don’t have a Sony TV to try reproduce or investigate the issue on but I can try with a few other Android clients.
Could you also give me the exact model of TV you have?
I see you said it sometimes does not work does this mean only with specific files or only sometimes with those specific files?
Thanks a lot for your answer.
I try to get a smaller file for testing, since the complete movie or episode has a huge filesize.
This issue does not get triggered on all files, since its related to a certain aspect ratio.
When the Movie is shot in a 16:9 ratio and fills the entire screen, the issue does not appear and the movie “The Family Plan” which has a 2.39 : 1 aspect ratio, there the local dimming issue appears. (also the movie needs to have DolbyVision to trigger this issue).
My exact TV is the Sony 75X95L
Ok can you also check which profile version of DoVi the file is? You can find the info by going to the web app for your server navigate to the preplay screen of an affected title click the ... then Get Info the information will look like this… (if you could share a screenshot that would be great otherwise I need the profile and level)

Sure, for example this:

Is this enough info or do you still need a sample file?
@morganj ?
Apologies for the delayed response I read your message at a weird time and then forgot about it so thanks for the follow-up. I tried on a TCL Android TV with a similar file and can see local dimming is functioning as expected, so if anything it may be specific to Sony.
I am going to follow up with a playback engineer and get back to you once I have more information.
You said it works on Jellyfin, can you confirm its playing as DoVi and not HDR on Jellyfin and is also direct playing?
Can you give this build a go and see if you notice any difference? If not could you provide the Android Logs? We don’t have a Sony TV to try on at the moment so may be a trial and error approach.
Thanks for your answers.
Yes, I just tried it again. Jellyfin is working perfectly and playing the movie in Dolby Vision. Its direct playing without transcoding.
I looked into the Jellyfin settings and there the preferred player is set to “ExoPlayer”.
Does Plex also use this player?
I tried it with your linked APK, but still get the Local Dimming issue.
Whats also strange is during watching the movie with plex, I can change the display mode settings from “letterbox” to “original” and then suddenly local dimming works but the movie zooms in and cuts of a lot of the image.
Where should I send you those logs?
The latest build 10.19.1.1166 has the fix for the local dimming issue.
