BUG - No Local Dimming on Sony X95L

Not sure if this is the right place, but over on the AVS forums we’re noticing that Plex doesn’t support local dimming on any of the internal plex apps on the X95L TV’s (or probably any Sony TV’s for that matter). Whenever a movie is playing in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, the LD doesn’t kick in. Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but could this be looked at?

Dimming control is 100% up to the tv, nothing to do with apps.

Other apps trigger local dimming just fine, though. It’s only Plex that doesn’t. Gotta be something different that Plex is doing compared to the other apps.

Just, no. The source material and player have absolutely nothing to do with your tv settings. Most likely you are playing something in a different way and don’t have that input or picture type setup properly. While playing whatever you see, go through your tv settings.

I understand why you would think that, but I am absolutely certain this is not a TV settings issue. I’ve double and trippled checked all settings over and over since I reported this issue back in August. Local dimming works as expected through the plex app on my X90L, local dimming works with content in other apps with the same settings on the X95L, it’s just the when plex plays content it isn’t triggering the TV to turn on local dimming for some reason.

This most likely due to a change Sony made where app menus are not locally dimmed on the X95L (they are on the X90L). Local dimming is supposed to be turned on once the content starts playing. Every other app does this. Plex doesn’t. I’m pretty sure it’s an issue with Plex not telling the TV that content (instead of the menu) is playing.

ROTF well there’s no convincing someone with zero clue of the fundamentals

Do you also take your car in for repair because when you get gas you can’t roll up your windows? lol

threeLetter is correct, it’s not a TV settings issue. This is widely reported and confirmed by many X95L owners over at AVSForum.

Simple way that I and others on AVS have validated is to play a DV video on Netflix showing local dimming enabled, then play a clip on Plex that is a verified DV file and find a spot that clearly lacks the LD. This isn’t conjecture, this is simple validation testing and it needs to be addressed through an update to the Plex app.

Here’s one of many posts showing the difference. This affects both plex and kodi - SONY BRAVIA X95L Mini-LED Owners Thread(No Price Talk) | Page 335 | AVS Forum

LOL try again. That was not a local dimming problem, it was a bad kodi app aversion with raised blacks.

Dude you don’t have to be a dick about it. It’s a problem verified by multiple people. I get if you disagree, but the way your handling yourself is the equivalent a petulant child.

LOL Don’t be mad because you don’t know the difference between local dimming and raised blacks

Local Dimming does somehow not get triggered inside the Plex app on my Sony TV when the content does not have a 16:9 aspect ratio…

…another one…wow.

Lol, someone has no clue how to troubleshoot. If LD is engaged on every other app except the Plex app, the problem isn’t the TV…it’s the app.

Still no update from a Dev on this topic? Its so annoying that Local Dimming does not work inside the plex app.
When I watch the exactly same file with Jellyfin everything works and with Plex Local dimming does not work at all…

Still no dev interest in this one?

This should already be fixed

As stated above this should already be fixed. @fir522 assisted in testing a few builds for us, the fix went out in v10.19.1. We removed a layer that was used to stop ghosting on older Sony TVs.

First, big thank you to the Plex folks! Second… I guess kaelaria gets to eat a whole bag of crow. Next time, don’t assume, be nice and try and help instead of insult that which you know nothing about.
